  1. Everything I can find says 4-600#' to crush the collar, which is more in line with my using a 3/4 breaker bar and a fence pipe to set the preload last time. (while standing beside the truck and picking up the near side tire!) I don't have the luxury of a shim set nor the proper conditions to R&R the ring and carrier multiple times to arrive at the 6-8 inch lbs torque for used bearings and just the pinion installed. I also don't have the collar out to measure, and order a proper distance piece (solid spacer) πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I don't mind snow, but I don't like this cold rain. It doesn't get any easier when you've abused your body for decades.
  2. Can't buy MEK or toluene any more either. Now they have 'replacement! or 'equivalent' solvents. Almost always based on acetone and/or ethyl acetate because for some crackhead reason these aren't considered VOC's.
  3. Jim, Big Brother’s stator harness is three wires one. Here is a picture of the new stator plugged on the old connector: Not sure, but I think this is the NAPA replacement harness connector I used to replace the original female connector. The difference is that the plastic flaps are located each sides instead up and down. Jus have to cut them to fit in the stator plug. By stator, you mean inductive pickup* in English? Purple, orange for the pickup and black for the brass ground tab just inside the rubber grommet? This is great info Jeff. Gary needs to include that part number (and the module ones Bill gave) in his DSII retrofit tutorial. There are VERY few '73-86 Fords left in the junkyard to harvest harnii from these days (50 years on)
  4. It seems I should have ordered Spicer 5-468X instead of 5-460X Amazon will have it here by Friday morning between 4-8 AM It's just not worth chasing crap like that only for the parts store to order it in anyhow. Looks like rain all week. Hopefully I can borrow a car or just keep rolling in front wheel drive. πŸ™„
  5. It used to stink to high heaven but couldn't catch fire. The stuff really lost its balls when the federal government banned methylene chloride and other chlorinated hydrocarbons back in 87. The ozone hole was a big deal and there was an international treaty signed in Montreal. There were caustics in there too. Like sodium hydroxide (lye) that ate up all the pot metal + brass floats & jets if you weren't paying attention.😳 Same thing happened to paint strippers like Zip-Strip and Rock Miracle. Totally worthless after that..... I'm sure Bill could tell you stories from the Preston days
  6. The only DISTRIBUTOR connector (which has the odd key) is found in the Painful DSII kit. The regular module plugs are everywhere, all day long.
  7. This is what I've said many times before. But our documentarian is never happy with a temporary solution that simply works.
  8. Then 3/16 should be plenty thick enough.
  9. Done as in I'm frustrated and am not going to lay in the mud if there's no chance of finishing. I'd have to take an Uber tonight, and again tomorrow to get home (with a pit stop for another universal) I need to take a deep breath
  10. 30 month gestation? Wow! You have sure come a long way since your last update. Should be good for another 300,000 miles!
  11. Depending on how banged up your floor is, something like this should work.
  12. Annnnnd it's pouring. πŸ˜– I'm D O N E! 😑 Actually the truck is very poor off the line. I can easily light up the front if I don't exercise extreme caution.
  13. Jim, I looked everywhere and do not find my NAPA bill. I plan to stop there and check with the guy if he could find my history. It's all cool. I was just trying to make the point that I had been trying to track down that connector. I know it's odd, and I can't seem to find it anywhere, except that Painful Duraspark kit
  14. I appreciate your effort! Come to find out I screwed up. The cap diameter is right but the cross width is wrong on that universal joint. I'm going to have to find something local, but that usually doesn't mean quality. At least I waited to pull the pinion until I had everything ready. I may only have a front wheel drive truck but at least I can get to the store
  15. That's a rotational torque spec for the pinion only (axles out because of seal drag) But I just can't go there, and don't have most of my tools -like the 1/4 drive lb in torque wrench and a piece of string- even if I wanted to. I have a new crush collar from the local stealership, and I KNOW it's going to take a lot more than 160 to flatten that out. I really wish that Jimmy from my local (and Best!) underbody/alignment shop hadn't retired.
  16. Very grateful! I've mentioned it a bunch of times. The kid in Florida that wanted my old one for his 351 and "didn't need or want" the drivers side flapper never ever reimbursed the shipping. I guess that was asking too much? But I told him. I even took it to the Post Office and had them weigh it first.
  17. What's the pinion torque spec on a 10.25? I don't have my book. TIA!
  18. No Look closely Gary has one at 6:00 and the white one is at about 8:00
  19. FedUp just got here (1:30) and I have to go infuse some more caffeine before I deal with this. There's no way I'm going to be done by dark.
  20. Like I said the distributor connector is keyed different than the module..... But you can lop off the key and fit them together. Maybe we would kill two birds with one stone if we found the right plug? Someone must make them We need a closeup of the Painful connector so we can look for die marks and/or the actual manufacturer ID. 🧐
  21. If you want it removable go to the weatherstrip section of your local big box and get CLOSED CELL neoprene gasket 1/4 thick by 1/2" Edit: Home Depot has it with the floor registers for some reason. If you don't care you can just RTV (silicone) it in place.
