  1. The tag on the firewall is a "buck tag", and I don't know how to decode it. Anyway, if you can find a new vacuum motor with that part number you'll be good. But, if not just get one from another air cleaner. It will work.
  2. Yes. Bottom line: Get tires sized to fit whatever rims you use. And later model rims did get wider. So if yours are later rims, measure them and get tires that are supposed to go on that size of rim.
  3. I've never seen one of those transmissions. Most of what I've been around in the manuals have been the NP435 and T18's and 19's. By the way, I do have an NP and a T19 for sale.
  4. Going with 3.73's should help him a bit on MPG. Does this thing have the speedo gear or, more likely, the electric sensor?
  5. Next pictures should be with red paint on the cab. The bed I can do almost at any time because other than the fenders there are no really big flat areas like the doors, roof & hood that can show dirt and how flat the paint smoothed out. After my cup of tea I will hit the garage to prep for the red paint. Dave ---- You must be right in the middle of it now. Good luck!
  6. Yippee!!!! Can’t wait for the ‘good’ pics.
  7. That thing is used up! But I think the trim will fit yours. So that's what a High Output heater looks like!? Dunno 'bout the odometer. Black weave? That looks really faded. More like gray. But maybe it is just the pic? It really should be black as the gray came in '84.
  8. Christopher - I'm not sure what you are looking at, but everything above was for a different truck. So let's look at yours. We start by going to the Calibration Codes page in the menu. In there we go to the Applications To Parts List tab and scroll down to 1981 and 351M. I've snipped that page and included it below, with all the applications I think could be yours. Note the Calibration Parts List #'s on the right, and go to the Parts List tab, and scroll down to each of those parts lists. Here's what I found for Vacuum Motor assy, (carburetor air cleaner): #54 takes D7TZ 9D612-B *CX-120 Color code: brown or D9FZ 9D612-A *CX-361 Color code: pink #93 takes D7TZ 9D612-B *CX— 120 #95 takes D7TZ 9D612-B *CX— 120 #147 takes D7TZ 9D612-B *CX— 120 #149 takes D7TZ 9D612-B *CX— 120 Now, if you can find the calibration code info on your engine (see Specifications/Calibration Codes in the menu for what they look like and where to look), then you can confirm which one of those it is. But, you'd obviously be safe with the D7TZ 9D612-B *CX— 120. (The *CX-120 is the Motorcraft part number.) I've purchased them NOS on line.
  9. Doubt I'll be able to join in. However, if I can, I will. 2 questions though. Where is Mr. Bass, and do they have diesel? If not, we may need to alter the plan a bit... The Sinclair about a mile from my house: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Mr.Bass/@36.3690993,-96.033768,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x87b6e73310092051:0xa9d2100b47ee9035!8m2!3d36.3690993!4d-96.0315793. And they have diesel, for sure. Filled Janey's car up there many times.
  10. I know the feeling. Even though my truck has the bigger mirrors, it never got much more than 10 mpg with the 300 C6 and 2.75 rear axle ratio. Now that I have the 5.9 cummins and nv4500 in front of that same 2.75 axle, it gets well over twice the mpg it did with the gas/auto combo, and pulls MUCH harder with very little pedal input. If I didn't have stuff going on, I would love to join into the MPG test. It would be very ironic for the oldest truck, and largest displacement engine, to win.... Paul - Friday the 20th is the plan, I believe. And, it'll be Mr. Bass in Skiatook, to Hominy, north on 99 to 11, and back through Barnsdall to Mr. Bass. BE THERE!
  11. Yes, you need to know the width. If you put too wide or too narrow of a tire on a wheel you get poor wear and poor steering/tracking. So just because your wheels had tires on them, you don't know that they are the right width for those tires, or the tires you are considering. There were both 5.5" and 6.5" in the Bullnose era. But wheels up into the 90's fit these trucks, and were usually wider. Do you know for sure what you have?
  12. Before I decide on tires to run on a given wheel I determine the width of the wheel. To do that, assuming those are Ford wheels, take a look at the Identification Codes tab at Driveline/Wheels and cross-ref your wheel's code to a part number. Then take that part number to the Applications tab to find the width. Once you have the width, then go to Tirerack and look at the tires in the size you are considering. Select 3 or 4 in which you are interested and click Compare and you'll get ratings for several categories. But, down below there's a + to tick for Detailed Specifications, in which you'll see the Rim Width Range for each tire. Check to see if the tires will fit your rims. Also, you will see the weight of the tire. The heavier the tire the worse the ride will be. Trust me, it makes a difference. As for which one, I've had good luck with Cooper tires.
  13. Shaun - Do you have an old grille you can paint black? Might make for an interesting front end with the black bumper and headlight doors. And thanks for the pic of where the sound deadening was. Basically under the seat. I think a good dose of Peal & Seal or somesuch would be a good replacement. But, it needs to adhere to the floor or something that's stuck to the floor quite well, so if that bed liner isn't..... As for Dorian, let's hope all you and anyone gets is the rain and tropical-force winds. Just talked with our son and with the latest track showing it not making landfall per se they'll stay.
  14. Shaun - Trust me, I know what you mean about being frustrated with the menu because things could be located in several different tabs/pages. It drives me up the wall, and probably a lot farther up than you since I should know where things are as I designed it. But, therein lies the problem - I didn't really design it, or at least didn't design it in one sitting. It was never envisioned to be this big, so there was never a comprehensive design that would accommodate everything that's in it. And as it grew decisions had to be taken on where the new piece would go, but sometimes they weren't good decisions. What it feels like is that we need someone(s) to take some time to focus on various aspects of the site. Maybe a "steering team" that would kick ideas around and help set directions. And, we need a way for people to register gaps and/or overlaps in the menu when they run across them so they can be fixed. As for the About Me, I know what you mean. Originally this was "my site" and I used it for many different things, including church. Now it seems to have taken on a very specific reason for being - Bullnose trucks. And, it may have graduated from just being my playground to being one of the main documentation sites for these trucks. So perhaps it is time for some of the personal stuff to move elsewhere, or to at least be moved into a corner. But, pretty much all websites have something like an About Me page where you can at least contact "them".
  15. Shaun - That's good input. Thanks. I can easily see that having the menu disappear until you scroll complicates things for new users. But, I'm not sure what you mean by a "a stripped down menu would keep the locked menu from being too wordy". The menu is the hamburger style for all devices, so are you suggesting going to a word-style menu? That only works for non-mobile devices as they default to the hamburger. Back to something that was previously suggested, what if we had something like this? Maybe not in red. Or maybe flashing neon. Dunno. Thoughts?
  16. Yes, go with the '80 EVTM. The '81 EVTM will be maybe 98% correct for the '80 trucks, but there are are differences. One area for differences is the warning light wiring. But, there were changes during the 1980 model year, so depending on when your truck was built you may find that the 1980 EVTM is correct or maybe the 1981 is correct. So if you have the 1980 EVTM and find it doesn't match yours then use the 1981 version on this site.
  17. Closer 3:30 to 8:00 got the truck taped up, more stuff tucked away, floor swept and primer on the cab! A little food and trash to the dump and hope primer will be dry enough to sand and throw some paint on it. I will get a picture or 2 with paint on it. Dave ---- I'll be waiting for the pics, Dave! After all this time I'll be you are STOKED!
  18. Yes! I never thought of draining the whole transmission via the dipstick tube, but I just suggested lowering the level that way.
  19. The way Weebly, the site hosting company, appears to work is that the first page, aka the "home" page, gets the base URL. But, in my casting about for how to manage things I've found that there are controls which appear to allow the editor to take charge of which page gets what URL. I've not played with those controls for fear of breaking something on our working website, so I think I need to create a test website on which to check that, and other things, out. But, if there's a way to keep garysgaragemahal.com as the forum so all those bookmarks are preserved, then we could have another page that would explain things and give the users simple choices of where to go. On the menu, I've not yet found a way to put a title or some other attention-getting device with it, although I haven't given up. However, there supposedly is a way to keep the menu visible. In other words, it wouldn't disappear as it currently does and not come back until you scroll. What do y'all think about making the menu fixed at the top of the page - assuming we can come up with a way to say something like "Documentation Menu" beside it? But, in order to make Documentation Menu accurate we need to take the Bullnose Forum and the entries below it off the menu. In other words, we need to move the Member's Map, FAQ's, etc into the forum via stickies as previously discussed. It seems reasonable to put everything associated with the forum in the forum. But, there's been little discussion about it, so I've been loathe to do it. So, let's keep kicking this around, but I'd hope others would chime in as well. I'd like to get a plan before implementing something and having to backtrack.
  20. I agree - I may view the site on my phone, and sometimes even reply. But, 52% of the traffic to the documentation is from mobile devices, 40% from desktop devices, and 8% from tablets. (I don't know the numbers to the forum, but suspect they are similar.) Anyway, on the first post I did add a link to the Four Wheeler site. But I don't find it easy to use. And, if you download the file you can search for terms. For instance, I got tired of looking for "silencers", so just searched for the term. It is in there twice, and I had both instances nailed immediately. In any event, it is there. EDIT: The %'s above do include the forum traffic. IOW, more than half of the users of the whole site, forum and documentation, do so via a mobile device.
