  1. Yep and I thought the hoses were going to be the PITA part Wife is not happy I got to put more money into this. When we picked up the compressor she asked then how much more? Told her hoses, dryer, belt and to charge the system. I am so close I can almost feel the cold air blowing ...... oh wait I was standing in front of the fan Dave ----
  2. I had to go to the first post to "catch up" and it sounds more and more like a fuel issue. Bad gas still in the tank? What ever was in there with the 2 hr drive on the flat bed would have mixed and kicked up anything in the tank and then trying to drive the last few blocks sucked up the badness Hope he gets it home Dave ----
  3. Quick check for spark and gas is needed. If you have an old spark plug around pull a wire and pop the plug in, place it on the motor for a ground. Watch the end when trying to start for spark. You should see a nice blue / white and hear a snap if you have spark. Could also put a little gas down the carb and see if it will try and start. If so it has spark but no gas. Pop the air filter off. open the choke if closed and looking down inside move the throttle you should see a stream or 2 of gas spray down into the carb. If no gas pour a little down carb and see if it will try and start. Not knowing your set up as I did not go to your earlier posts but if you have a fuel pump on the motor you can get some rubber hose and a small can of gas. Hook the hose up to the inlet of the fuel pump on the motor and the other end in the can set on the fender and see if it will start and run. If so tie up the can and drive it home. The last is got a buddy with a good tow strap and something to pull the Bronco with? Under the cover of darkness, less traffic, and drag it on home. Good luck Dave ---- ps it sound like it is not getting fuel if you can get up to speed or stalling on hills, anything when giving it more throttle would be fuel in my book. Bad rubber hoses maybe?
  4. The flare side has rear fenders on the bed You have what Ford calls a style side, you used the chevy name IIRC and the chevy name for a bed like mine is step side. Factory AC and rebuilding it that is cool. I am using a newer compressor with an older evap and playing with hoses & dryers to get everything to play nice. Thing is the motor did not have AC on it so I am at a lost on belts / pulleys. I have a question if you can on how the compressor belt gets run around what pulleys and how many My issue is the compressor belt does not line up with any of the groves on my water pump, crank or PS & grooves the pulleys have? ALT. Maybe start with the crank pulley with number of grooves, water pump & grooves, PS grooves and ALT grooves. Then what belt runs in what grooves. I think if there is a bolt on pulley for the crank and find the right one for the water pump I might be good but I don't know what the factory set up was like on the belts. Thank you for any help you can give and no rush the truck is not my DD, to hot with no AC LOL Dave ----
  5. Welcome to the forum. That 86 would not be a flare side would it? If so you would be another member of the FOG (Flare side Owners Group). Sound like some cool mods have been done to the truck over the years. Did I see you are adding AC or rebuilding it? I added factory AC to my truck not an easy job. Was working on the AC part running today and ran into an issue with the drive belt not lining up to any grooves. I am also a fan of the 300 six, that is what my 81 F100 flare side has but I have a NP435 & overdrive. Like you I did all the work my self, 4 year cab off frame rebuild, even the paint. We need to see pictures of your truck(s) we love pictures - never mind I now see the pictures You have done a great job so far. On the AC was the truck a factory AC or not? Looking at the compressor bracket it looks factory. If so I may have a question for you on the belt setup. Dave ----
  6. I was also working on the AC on my truck. Think I got the hoses figured out but the belt is a whole other issue I just moved the truck back to the house garage and the Javelin into mine and closed it up before the storm hits and the temp was 98*+ Dave ----
  7. Up date on the dryer, The later 83-86 one will not fit the 80/81 evap. The fitting between them don't match so I will have to return it and the hose that dose not fit anything and order the right dryer. Once the belt issue is worked out I should be all set to vacuum & charge the system. Dave ----
  8. I was out in the garage earlier and it was 96* when I walked in and I had all the doors open for hours before ...... yep that my story and I am sticking to it Dave ----
  9. 68 Dodge van I learned to drive on and you could reach in thru the front grille to the rods and do the same thing. Before that my parents had 65 Dodge vans they had to do it on so I knew how to do it before I started to drive LOL Dave ----
  10. Why did I think like down under? that would be NZ no? Never mind carry on Yep them fancy old plates you have to watch out for and I am sure they go by state on the type of restrictions. I guess some of the cruse inns would be out if they start late as you would be out after sun down. Dave ----
  11. What?! 🤷‍♂️ I bought the copper “Historic Vehicle” plates for my ‘81 and was told that it just needed to be 25+ years old and that I had to be willing to pay the extra registration cost. Never any mention of restrictions (or benefit exemptions) for having these plates. I’ve had these plates for 3 years and never been pulled over for driving at night. They gave me two plates, but told me the front is optional. Did you see he in not in the USA. Also if in the USA I think it goes by the state DMV as to the restrictions placed on the plate and why I did not get one for my truck and same goes for insurance and restrictions. I have Hagerty Insurance on my truck that I got thru my agent. All I told them was what I had and the work I put into it that the normal run of the mill insurance would not cut it. A few days later they called be back with prices and what would be covered, etc. I was happy and told them go for it. I did not have to take the truck to anyone or have them come look at it or even send pictures, it's not like I don't have any There is no restrictions from DMV as I have normal plates and vary little restrictions from Hagerty as they say "You want to show off your pride & joy and we want you to so drive it!" and I have. I cant remember if they wanted it in a garage but it is and locked when at my house but at work it is in the parking lot with the rest of the guys trucks & cars. Mine is insured for $11,000 and I can up that if I want at any time. I can also insure any extra parts I have for the truck, I did not. If the truck is totaled, hope that never happens, I can have it back to do as I want with it. I am happy that I can drive it any time and any place not just weekends and to / from shows only. Dave ----
  12. Thanks Steve for that information it all helps. I went with Ester oil because that is what most said to use on a mixed (R12 / 134A) system. I will have to re-read the post to see how much I need to add to the system. Well ran into I hope a little problem. My home made brackets fit the compressor and the motor side bracket so the compressor is bolted in place. Next I figured lets put the belt on and this is where it turned bad the crank has 3 belt grooves, P/S pump only has 1 groove, ALT only has 1 groove, water pump has 2 large and 1 small (air pump? don't have one) groove. ALT uses the groove close to the motor on the crank & water pump and lines up great. The P/S uses the outer groove on the crank and nothing else. The center groove on the crank and the small one (close to the radiator) on the water pump are not used. It looks like the water pump needs a larger groove where the small one is and the crank needs one added to the front of it for the AC belt to work. So what pulleys do I need to get this to work? I should add I am using the GM style PS pump I was told from a van. On a better note I think I have all the hoses I need to have a sealed system. 1 of the new hoses I bought I have no clue where it is used as 1 end looks to be NPT and no where on the system do I have that. I want to say it was the line from evap where the orifice valve goes to the condenser as I had to reuse my old one. So I am guessing the later evaps have a NPT where mine does not? I should be able to use the 80/81 dryer as the hose does fit it but I needed to bend the dryer fitting a little so the hose would clear the hood. I do want to see if the 83/86 new dryer will fit the evap and if so then that hose will fit a lot better and no need to bend the dryer. But if the new dryer does not fit I now know I can get one to replace mine and be good to go. Once I get the pulley / belt thing worked out I should be good I think. Dave ----
  13. Why only 2 cables when the truck has 3 cables. You can not know by looking at them if they are good or bad so just replace them with the largest cables you can get at AZ. I know by me they have curb side pick up, could order and ride there and not even need to stop LOL. They do have on line "ship to home" but may take a day or 2. I ordered the AC parts for my truck and some were shipped next day and others, hoses, 2 days later. On my projects they get new cables and never had any problems. Heck my Javelin project I don't tighten 1 down as I pull it when sitting in the garage. I just place it on the battery and the car starts right up. I did the same to my truck till I got it on the road. Good cables are a god send! Dave ----
  14. It is hard to pick one but went with Steve/Old55pete's 86 Bronco because Broncos need love too. I also like the color combo Dave ----
  15. What are we working on again as different year / motors have different fuel systems for dual tanks. In your case if the new sender is showing full there is a short to ground. Now could it be the new sender or the wiring for that tank you will have to check to find out. If you um-plug the sender and the gauge does not move to full it is the sender. If it still goes to full it is the wiring any where from the tank to gauge but depending on where the gauge switches for the tank (some systems do this at the frame tank switching valve and why I asked on the system you have) then you only need to check to that point. IIRC on my 81 with a 300 six both tank wiring go up to the dash switch as dose a 3rd wire for the tank switching valve. The dash switch sends power to the tank switching valve or not, spring loaded valve so 1 tank is online with no power. The dash switch for the gauge then picks what tank it is on, front or rear, to send that signal to the gauge. Good luck and hope its an easy fix Dave ----
  16. Between trying to find a ZF5 for a small block and then a good one or needing to find someone that knows what there are doing and a price of $1500 to $2000 and needing to find all the brackets & hydr. clutch setup was all to much so I went with the Advance Adaptor's over drive unit. All I had to do was move the transmission back 7.5 inches - shifter hole, cross member & brackets, shorter drive shaft. Other than the drive shaft it could be done in a weekend. And I have 8 forward and 2 reverse gears now not that you can or want to use them all, all the time. I find I have used it most when in 4th gear for 4th OD. Dave ----
  17. Up north in CT it has been that way for 30 years or more unless they knew you really well. When I called on the AC compressor down here in NC to the yard that listed it on Car Parts.com I asked about the AC hoses, mounting brackets & dryer, hoses & dryer were for test fitting only as I really did not want to go new and not have them fit. Anyway he told me he only had the compressor and not of the other stuff. The part was listed "still on truck", come to find out it was a diesel truck still running and they did not want to start pulling it apart. A lot of yards that will not let you in is because of insurance, if you got hurt then what? Also the EPA and oil / fuel / coolant spills and the large fines! So it is better for them to get the car / truck in, check to see what works and doesn't, drain fluids and pull parts and scrap the rest. They also don't need a much land to store part over a full car / truck. Dave ----
  18. Nice looking Javelin. It a 71 - 74 Javelin and looks to have AMX badge on the rear pillar. They had a base model and a SST model. Do you know what size motor it had? they came with 258 straight six, 304, 360 & 401 v8's and for transmissions they had auto's and 4 sp sticks. The 68 - 70 Javelins were base model or SST, most were SST. Then you have the 68 - 70 AMX, it was 12 inch shorter than the Javelin and 2 seat model. 2 different cars for 68 - 70 when in 71 - 74 they no longer made the 12 inch shorter AMX but made it a upgrade to the Javelin model. Dave ----
  19. That does look nice, cant wait to see the cab done and the bed on. X2 Wish my paint looked as nice. My guy didn't even bother to paint the inside of the fuel door... My guy painted the inside of both fuel doors, oh wait that was me Paint boot? We don't need no stinking paint booth when you have a garage Dave ----
  20. Cool story, I still have my first Bullnose .......... but I only bought it 4 years ago Then again I did a cab off frame rebuild as a driver and have up till it got hot, no AC yet. I did hold on to my first new truck for 16 years and 230K miles and sold it for my 2nd new truck. Still have it after 18 years & 240K and counting. I think there is a thread started on "other projects" you could post up something on the Mustang as I am sure others would like to hear what you are doing to it. Dave ----
  21. Thanks for the information. I got out of HVAC just when the need for cert's came out. You can buy 3 cans 1 store and then 3 more at another if needed LOL Not that I plan to do that. I want to only add the needed amount 1 time! The oil that leaked out of the compressor had a green color to it. I don't know if it was a R12 or 134A system it came off of, mine a R12. That is why the question on oil as I thought some did not play well with R12. I have Ester coming but want to make sure before I add anything to the system. I knew the psi switches had different settings but thought the R12 could be adjusted? But being the system is open might as well replace it with the right one. The orifice valve was black that I pulled out but a blue one coming as that's what was listed to use. Good to hear it will work. Thanks again. Dave ----
  22. That is the first I have heard of not using it in reverse, don't think even on GV site. I guess the box would keep that from happening as it will not go into OD unless going 30 MPH and you would not be doing that backing up. Dave ----
  23. Cool story I thought so starting life as a style side before the flare side (step side is chevy) as it had style side moldings on the cab. THe wood floors are nice but you cant use it and not hurt the wood. Beside its a lot of money to go back wood if you don't have any of it. I have a ribbed metal floor from a style side on my flare side only because I did not have the $$ to go back with wood. From the out side it is just another flare side pickup, trash in bed for the weekly trash run. Dave ----
  24. What you are going to do about the VIN on the cab not matching the frame VIN? Could have issues getting plates or even to sell when the buyer cant get plates because the VIN's don't match. Beside swapping the cab you will have to swap the wiring harnesses between the trucks as they will be different. Newer truck will have a computer and yours does not so the wires will come thru the fire wall in different places and will have holes left over in the good cab. I did a cab off frame rebuild and swapped wiring harnesses but I had the same year & motor / trans trucks to do the swap with and was a lot of work. Just think you are going between years and different fuel (motors & trans?) system can be a lot more work than I went thru. Dave ----
  25. WOW Looks like everything on that side of the road is being replaced! Sometimes I thing the wife and I got out just in time. Even were we are, between us and the high way (2 miles at most) there was a farm with cows that they built a sub division in and across the street they built low cost apartments. Across the street from us they built 4 houses, cant be seen from the street, and think there are 4 more lots for sale. Between us and Raleigh there are making the high way (I40) wider to handle the traffic and depending on the time of day it is not coming soon enough! Times are changing all over Thanks for the pictures going to show the wife soon. Dave ----
