Jim - That is awful! I'm so sorry! Dad was never diagnosed as to what type of dementia he had, but it was obvious he had some form of it. And it is a terrible disease. So, so sorry! She's okay for now. Just forgetful in the odd ways. It's unfortunate, because she is pretty much at my level, but with a masters in social work and 25+ years background in forensic pathology (worked in the morgue) She's taught me a lot about how to human body works. But this also means she knows her fate intimately. She doesn't have any sign of MS or Parkinson's.

Absolutely Gasoline has a very high vapor pressure, so when you pump ~20 gallons out of deep underground it will expand as well as fume. If it can inflate a steel tank, it will push right past a float valve, without some other escape.

If you look at the diagram, the pump gets direct (prime) power while cranking through a bk/pk wire.... (I think it's black and pink, I'm not looking, from the reply window )

It needs to vent (or you have a rollover valve + charcoal canister) otherwise the pressure will force fuel past the float valve of your carburetor.
