I realize this might be entirely too simple for you, but, I assume that the conditions under which you would need this would be (a) off road, probably rock or similar crawling (b) in 4WD low range and 1st gear in the ZF. © one hand on the wheel and the other on the shifter. If it were me, I would put a key switch on the dash with a warning light reading "starter safety bypassed", this switch would be a double pole single throw normally off. One side would jumper the clutch safety, the other turn on the light. A push button switch on the shifter to activate the starter, sort of like the splitter control on the big rig transmissions. This way both hands stay where they are needed.

Many of the same, but I will add one: Finding extra parts after the job is finished Helped the neighbors in Norfolk do an in frame rebuild on their 1954 Chevy 235 engine after we were done with the rod bearings and rings we had a couple of extra jam nuts left over. Getting a series of pieces installed and find the one item that should have been first I'm sure we've all done this, like forgetting to put the fuel pump eccentric on the cam and realizing it's sitting there as you are tightening the last bolt on the front dress.
  3. Unfortunately the nice Allen machine I had at Preston ended up in the scrap bin. I had gotten it from the people who bought Preston when they were closing it. The distributor clamp was frozen, the double threaded screw (one end RH the other LH) was stuck in the aluminum jaws. I had disassembled the unit far enough the get the clamp off and look at the electronics as it was built when electronic ignition systems were rare. Plan was fix the clamp and figure out a way to trigger the electronics from various systems (Ford, Chrysler, GM and AMC). It was at a friend's shop in Suffolk VA, under the bench, partially disassembled. He, maybe one or more of his brothers, decided it was junk and scrapped it. That machine was bought over a Sun for two reasons, cost and max rpm. It would spin a distributor to 5,000 rpm = to 10,000 engine rpm.
  4. Jim, I actually had a hybrid loaner paid for by insurance when T2K-CAR MKI was totaled. Because the Lebaron was considered a "premium car" (humerus in view of it being a K-car in drag). It was a Toyota Prius and not a bad car to drive. I wanted to see how they were as my supervisor had two Prii and loved them.
  5. You just described my 1986 factory system. The only changes have been, changed front pipes to set from a 1990 to match the heads and manifolds, replace the extension pipes (168" wheelbase) with a set to connect from the catalyst inlet flange (no cat) to the muffler inlet. Tailpipe screens were deleted in 1994. Darth still has his factory muffler and tailpipe.
  6. Jim, since my garage doors are actually commercial (Overhead Door) the torsion springs are inside the rolls. I realized after they were up and mounted, and I closed in the front wall that the upper mounts for the doors to the tracks weren't accessible any more. I may get up there and take the sheet metal covers off and tack the nuts to the door roll end plates. Winding the torsion springs wasn't real fun, I made a bar to rotate the wheel on the end opposite the drive sprocket so I could tension them in increments until they ran smoothly (not quietly though).

  8. No, they are flat head. The OHV Kohler twins are V-twins, I have a CV22S (24hp). You may be thinking of the OMC engines Cushman used in their golf carts and scooters. They were OHV opposed twins.
  9. On my Kohler twins, the difference between an MV16 and an MV18 is the cylinder heads, the MV18 has a smaller chamber in the heads raising the compression enough to gain 2 hp.

  11. First thing would be to pull the driven gear out of the transmission or transfer case and see how many teeth are on it. A lower tooth count will read higher. Example - current tooth count is 21, a 20 tooth gear will show a higher speed a 22 tooth gear will show a lower speed. One other item, tire size, if you went up to a larger diameter tire, it will cause your speedometer to read low.

  14. One of the lab supervisors at Newport News Shipbuilding built racing engines for a "stock" class using a B&S 5 hp single. He used a lot of the old Flathead tricks. He also designed and manufactured a boring setup for small engines, E-Z Bore Inc. www.ezbore.net
  15. No, varidrive is a variable ratio belt drive system. Front belt runs from the rear side (flywheel) of the engine, down to a pair of idlers, one a V style the other flat. From there it runs to a dual pulley with a floating center (originally may have had a spring to bias the center in one direction). The other side of the "variator" has the belt that drives the AYP 3 speed transaxle. I will pretty well bet your has a hi-lo shift on that 3 speed transaxle.

First thing, notice the size of these compared to the L&L mounts, they last, Darth's are still the original 1986 ones. The frame perches are also different for the 460 due to the size of the engine and where the mounts sit.
  17. You can download the IPL from Briggs & Stratton's website. Unfortunately, unlike Kohler, you can't get the service manual that way. I would recommend that be ordered so you have all the correct torque values. The GT (Garden Tractor) models were initially equipt with Onan twins mounted sideways, flywheel on the left side, PTO on the right. I assume yours is configured that way but with the B&S engine. The GTV (Garden Tractor Varidrive) turned the engine 90° with the flywheel on the back of the engine and the PTO pulley on the front behind the grille. I also have a sleeve hitch on mine and I built an adapter to mount a 2" hitch ball on the mechanism so I can spot or move my Aluma trailer or tow dolly with it.
  18. Two strokes are good for weed wackers and chainsaws as they will run in any position. Here are some pictures of a few of my engine collection: Craftsman (Tecumseh) 10 hp cast iron engine. Rare Tecumseh OHV V-twin, OV691EA. MTD wanted 18 HP, so Tecumseh sold then an 18 HP engine. It is actually more like 25 HP. Here is my 16 HP Briggs & Stratton engine from my GTV16.
  19. Jim, the Navy had, in the days of coal and oil fired boilers, two main levels of steam, 600 psi and 1200 psi. From what I remember my dad telling me the temperature in degrees F is the same as the pressure. The 600 psi was usually what is called "saturated" steam and may have some water droplets. It is what most people think of when you say steam. A leak manifests itself as a visible white cloud at the leak source. The 1200 psi is "super heated steam" and a leak is invisible and deadly. Method for finding a leak, broomstick held out and slowly swung in a circle as you advance with it. When the end vanishes, you have found the leak. Due to limitations and safety concerns Nuclear plants run 600 psi as the primary loop pressures would be astronomical to get 1200 psi and 1200 deg steam in the secondary. Our first nuclear carrier, USS Enterprise, CVN65 had 8 reactors, each having 4 steam generators (nuclear plant equivalent of a boiler) so she had 32 steam generators. Now, for a little more information. At the end of WWII, there were a number of ships under construction at NNS and government yards and other civilian yards. All the battleships were essentially scrapped on the shipways. The recently launched USS Kentucky was towed to Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth VA. A lot of her and other canceled BBs main propulsion machinery ended up in the SS United States as she had to be capable of conversion to a high speed troop transport. FWIW, her record speed run that took the Blue Riband from the Queen Mary was with 8 of her 12 boilers on-line and 3/4 throttle. Her main machinery spaces were off limits to all except US lines and NNS employees. Gibbs and Cox designed her hull, 990 feet waterline length and 101.5 feet beam. Largest dimensions to fit through the Panama Canal at that time. Her basic hull design became the Forrestal class carrier hulls. The Enterprise was a stretched Forrestal hull from 990 feet to 1011 feet because of the extra space needed for the reactor plants.

  21. What model Craftsman tractor? I have a 1972 GTV16 that has a belt drive system that is interesting to say the least. Front belt layout looks like it was stolen from a Corvair, rear is fairly normal. Engine is a Briggs & Stratton 402417 16hp opposed flathead twin that is a horizontal shaft version. I acquired a sleeve hitch for it after my former department manager bought it on eBay for his ST16. He found out the major difference between a Craftsman GT and ST, the frame width. There are several groups for Craftsman or Sears tractors. As with many items Sears sold, they weren't made by Sears, but for them. Riding mowers and tractors had 3 main sources, Murray, for the cheap lines, MTD for the mid lines and AYP (American Yard Products) for the high end. Back is still bothering me, we are taking the alarm system (Trixie) for her "spa day" and then going up to Salisbury MD as Mary has a pipe dream of wanting a "gussied up Chevy" (Cadillac Escalade) and wants to look at any the Dealer there might have. She objects to climbing up into Darth, but wants something probably taller. On the back issue, I am giving the Jordan Young Institute until noon today to call me, after that I will call and see what their problem is.
