  1. The Bronco's had a weird fixed yoke with a kind of spherical joint. I haven't seen enough shortbed 4x4's to offer much help, unfortunately, Jonathan.
  2. Tesla's everywhere up here. You see a few Rivian's and Ioniq's Some like the almost complete lack of maintenance, but after being given a ride in a dual motor Model S Plaid, I can tell you 0-60 in 2.5 seconds and 10 seconds quarter miles without any noise or fuss at all really does have it's appeal. I can only describe the acceleration as violent. There's one guy in town with an original 2010 Roadster (the stretched Lotus Elise model) in British racing green with over 300k still on his original battery. He owns a solar company and the vanity plates say SUNPWR.
  3. There's certainly no waiting at the rest stops around here. These photos are of the other side parking lot of the same "welcome center" This is I-95 in lower Fairfield county, where we see over 300,000 cars a day. There's one of these about every 10 miles, at least as far up as New Haven. "Peak times" are when everyone gets up, turns on the coffee maker and takes a hot shower. Then again in the evening when people get home, crank the AC and cook dinner. (at the same time) With more and more renewables on the grid there's often such abundance that rates go to zero before the utilities need to curtail production. With vehicles added to the grid there's extra grid storage available and 'smart chargers' can not only take advantage of this, but they can help with balancing the load. (take a look at the stats for wind in West Texas last year!) If they actually had grid connections none of that curtailed power would have had to be dumped into the earth.....
  4. Plenty of open spaces, and these chargers are never broken. But that's not really the point. With V2H you charge at home (or can use the car in the case of a "rolling blackout"..) You never have to stop for gas or waste that time. Vehicles are quiet and have ferocious acceleration.
  5. Right, and with all the car manufacturer is now going to the "North American Charging Standard" those chargers will be useful for all kinds of vehicles.... The tradesman vehicles get used 8 hours a day which means they have 16 hours to sit plugged in... So the manufacturers economize by using smaller charge controllers and slower battery chemistries...

  7. Because, like I said, these pickups are made for work, not screwing around on trails or pulling your toy hauler on vacation. IT'S RIGHT THERE IN THE NAME! I'm not sure what you're missing.

  9. "Rust Never Sleeps".... It's mostly sulfuric or hydrochloric that are awful. Phosphoric acid, like Kleen-Strip Concrete and Metal Prep pretty much only needs rinsed off when it's done. Oxcylic or Citric acid don't smell too bad. Citric is REALLY cheap, in bulk
  10. Maybe you entirely missed the "tradesman" moniker????? There's a reason. It's not a diesel dually. Highway miles hauling a trailer (high wind resistance plus no regen braking) is already the worst case scenario for electric. Yet Tesla is installing more chargers at rest stops throughout the nation. They are constantly monitored and never seem broken. Maybe I will stop in Darien this morning and get a picture of the banks of Tesla and the other new EV chargers. 20 minutes in the welcome center using the facilities and grabbing a bite to eat should get your vehicle to 80+% of charge. If you have an aerodynamic car, that's typically another 225-275 miles, and I would be ready to stretch my legs after 4+ hours of driving.
  11. You can remove all the rust with acid. It will eat all the iron oxide before it touches solid metal. Chemistry is fun! (and useful, sometimes)
  12. AGAIN Your's is the completely wrong use case. These vehicles are for professionals that would typically work for a larger company. They come to the shop in the morning, possibly stop at the supply house or lumber yard and go to the job. That job site might not have power, but the truck does. Power tools are VERY intermittent. But we are all grateful that you don't have to listen to a generator running all day or choking on the fumes. Quitting time, you return to the shop or yard and plug it in. Operating costs are ridiculously cheap and maintenance is almost non-existent. No tuneups, oil or filter changes. No cooling system because it's not losing 60+% of its energy as heat from the exhaust and radiator. With regen, brake pads and rotors last well over 150k mi. Sure, you still have tires and shocks. But this is what keeps you attached to the road so it's best to pay attention here. Also, you have to consider that given how these trucks are supposed to be used, there's no need at all for super fast charging. A lot of money can be saved with cheaper battery chemistries and charge controllers that don't need to handle 1000+A.
  13. Glad you got that situation resolved. Media blasting is still sure to cause more friction. Sure. You can crawl around on a tacky floor and paint it best you can. Like I said, I'm not trying to stop you or sell anything. Just that there are much better products, and they have no time constraints. If you have no problem with the window of opportunity (or retirement means every day is a Saturday -except Sunday- like Gary) then go for it!
  14. Glad it's not seized. Congratulations! Did the farmer say why he parked it? Hopefully the rings will begin to seal when you finally get it running. Not uncommon for a bit of condensation to settle to the bottom of the pan. Good you dropped the oil, water is not the first thing that engine wants to see, when it starts. Depending on how bad the sludge is (maybe pull the valve cover?) you might want to run some ATF, MMO, or Rislone for a bit, changing filters often....
  15. You think your neighbor dislikes you now???? I don't like it because it only sticks to a crappy substrate, and as Gary says, nothing sticks TO it.. If you're painting a rusty frame with a brush and roller in your driveway, then it has its place. ALL the rest is marketing hype and a legion of users that don't know that much better products exist.   16. I'm not a fan of manual abrasion (or POR 15 ) myself. Not to say you can't get a good enough job, but if you're paying actual money at a physical auto body supply... Strip or media blast it. Use an acid etching DTM epoxy primer/sealer and the topcoat of your choice.
  17. I blame the "it can be tuned from the front seat with a laptop (or even a phone app) in real time" Rather than the carb itself. I used to have four boxes of Holley tuning parts! Technology marches on. Would try to design an emissions system around vacuum operated controls, to meet today's emissions standards? For that matter (if fuel mileage didn't matter) it's a lot easier to make power with ethanol than gasoline. You just have to make it at 9:1! Look at any drag strip or race course. Look back at the days of Gran Prix race cars making 1100 HP in qualifying trim. Look at the fiery accidents, with no flames apparent. The '70's were a great time to be young at Watkins Glen.
  18. Lock washers are next to useless. If you're really concerned use distorted prevailing torque lock nuts. They will not come loose.

  22. The 4180c is actually 630 CFM. I've also run a Holley 080457-s, an Edelbrock AVS 650 and currently a 750 CFM 4160 w/ Motorcraft electric choke and quick change secondary spring housing. With the original 4180 and a stock cam, set straight up it would pull straight through the 5,800 redline and somewhere north of 6k. The truck definitely wasn't out of breath at redline (4.10's & a T-19)
  23. Did you clean everything off and run it for 30 seconds? The other option is UV dye and have someone else start it while you look..
