  1. I'm sorry, but I get lost in your schematic. But why not do it as shown below? It would pull the fuel pump relay in when the key is on and the button is pushed, thereby priming the carb.
  2. Well, check this out: Documentation/Emissions/Understanding Emissions Controls.
  3. Well done! Glad it worked out so well.
  4. Ok, time for a picture. I was ready to say this piece of the wiring is done, but as it turns out it isn't - quite. As it turns out, the shielding isn't grounded, so I have to do that, which will be easy. And I need some larger convolute to cover the run from the ECU to the PDB, and what I saw online has a one week delivery date, which isn't to my liking. So I'll be doing some more looking. As for what is left to do: Install the system and mate up all the connectors, install the grounds, and install the OBD-II connector under the dash Run wires from the Emissions and Low Range lights to a connector to match the one coming from the ECU Build the cable that will go from C110 to the O2 sensors Install the diode on the A/C compressor connection and connect the wire that goes back to the ECU to that Make a short #2 cable to go from the PDB to the Cole Hersee battery parallel relay After that it is down to things like set the ignition timing per Bill's instructions, test fuel pressure, and see if it'll run.
  5. Yes, that's good progress. Well done!
  6. Well, I think that's progress. One more layer of the onion peeled.
  7. I took 2 leaves out of BB's rear springs, losing 2" in height that I got back via taller blocks, but dramatically improved the ride. Why not take another leaf out and test it?
  8. Sounds like the column linkage is out of sync with the transmission's linkage. If I remember correctly you can loosen a bolt on the linkage and put the column in Park and put the transmission in Park and then tighten the bolt. BUT! Make sure the truck isn't going roll when you take the tranny out of Park.
  9. Chris - I missed your post, but Cold Starting Procedures are shown as part of Chokes under Carburetion. Basically all that video talks about is carbs and chokes thereupon, so it seemed like I could combine them on one page. Yes? Bill - Good point. Should Emissions Systems still be separate? The early emissions systems, like thermactor, weren't electronic, but as soon as EEC came along it became part of that, as did EGR and vapor venting. So it seems like that is a fit as well. Yes? Right now we only have two entries in Emissions Systems - Inferred Mileage and Thermactor. But I have the book on order that I'll scan and put on the site, and it needs to be part of Emissions Systems.
  10. We might could say something like "Engine Management (Carb's, EFI, etc.). As for the younger generation, even my son has gotten used to drive-by-wire where there's effectively no throttle return spring. On Big Blue with the carb I had two such springs as I was trying to get a consistent idle speed, and never did, and when he first tried to drive it he couldn't depress the throttle. Thought it was broken.
  11. LOL! Yes, the '86 trucks were an oddball that way. Hadn't thought about that. For those that didn't "twig" to what we are talking about, through 1985 in North America there were two ways the dash came - full gauges or gauges with indicator lights for oil pressure and charging. The full gauge package had an ammeter that was "less than informative". In 1986 the indicator light option was dropped, but starting in 1987 there was no option for a full gauge package and all the trucks got an indicator light for charge. IOW, at some point in the 80's Ford realized that the ammeter was a poor offering. It required a shunt, a piece of wire with more resistance than the rest of the wiring, to generate the small voltage that drove the ammeter. But that wire was limited in current capacity and as the output of the alternators was set to go through the roof, if you put a wire in that would handle the higher output you'd never ever see a discharge when the alternator failed. So 1987 they went back to the age-old indicator light, which was the best solution all along.
  12. My first thought was that only connecting in one place to the existing harness is a huge improvement over what I'm doing, which is to add Ford's EEC-V system to a carb'd 460. But then I realized that the vast majority of my wiring has been just to extend the wires going to the ECU so I can relocate it. And off the top of my head the only connections from the '85 wiring to the EFI wiring, excluding other things like speed control and horn, are: Fuel Pump: The ECU controls when the fuel pump runs. A/C: The system wants to know when the compressor comes on Clutch/Brake: 4 Low: Vehicle Speed Sensor So it isn't as invasive as I was thinking. However, when you consider everything else that is going on at the same time, like the adoption of the later model speed control and moving several relays into the PDB from free standing, it has gotten a bit more complex.
  13. If we rename "Fuel & Air Systems" to "Carburetion & Fuel Injection" where would we put the air intake stuff? I hadn't thought about how renaming would exclude air intake, but it does seem to do so. On the other hand, "Fuel & Air Systems" seems to exclude the electrical side of things, and starting with the feedback systems there sure is a lot of electrical in there. Perhaps we should just leave it as "Fuel & Air Systems" since they really do incorporate a lot of electrical things? Or, as you pointed out, "Engine Management" has evolved from points and carbs to full-on systems that do everything, inc the throttle. So maybe it should be "Engine Management" and we include Ignition? We can always put a page or a link from Documentation/Electrical/Ignition to Documentation/Engine Management/Ignition, or vice versa.
  14. Seems like you are making good progress. And, as Jim is apt to say, progress is GOOD!
  15. Phil - First, you are now on the map. Second, I'm confused. You said your truck is an '86, and here in the States an '86 was the first year where the idiot light configuration wasn't offered. IOW, an '86 US truck wouldn't have a charge light like your harness does. And, it would have only had one in the alternator circuit, which is indeed #904. So where was your truck made? And do you have an ammeter or idiot light in the cluster? As for the diode fixing things, that tells me that your alternator is feeding power back on the excite wire. But it shouldn't. None of the trucks w/o the charge light had a diode and the excite wire goes right back to the ignition switch where it would power the ignition if it was feeding power back. So there's something different about your alternator. But if it works and if a diode fixes the problem, that's good. It shouldn't cause a problem with another alternator. However, a little indicator bulb probably won't pull enough current to run the ignition, so that might fix it as well. Or both the diode and bulb for a belt & braces approach.
  16. I'll bet it does well tomorrow. And, that your wife is proud.
  17. It is looking great! And I agree, maybe Big Blue needs your help.
  18. I'm anxious to see what you think of the new vs old system.
  19. Welcome, Ian! Glad you joined. Love the name Ian. It is my favorite grandson's name. Come to think of it, he's my only grandson. Where in NW NM? Around Farmington? I ask because we have a map (Bullnose Forum/Member's Map in the menu) and we can add you with a city or zip.
  20. Welcome! Glad you found us and joined. But don't miss the request to post in the New Members Start Here folder. That's because in going there you'll have another chance to see the guidelines, which we have posted there, and that is important because we hold people to them. And, when you do that I'll ask where home is, but I'll explain why then.
  21. Congrats! That's significant progress. On your problem accelerating and when starting, I think you have a carburetion problem. Both with the accelerator pump and with the idle stop. But you will get it sorted, I'm sure.
  22. You are now on the map. And I do know where Conroe is as I used to live in Katy and we traveled through there many times on I-45.
  23. Welcome, Ian! Glad you joined. SE Tejas? IIRC, when you cross the bridge coming out of Houston you cross the "Old & Lost Rivers". Never understood how you could lose a river. Anyway, we could put you on our map (Bullnose Forum/Member's Map on the menu) if you'd give me a city closer than "SE Texas". But, not an address.
