Why drive a truck with a big six cylinder?
Gary Lewis replied to 1986F150Six's topic in Bullnose Enthusiasts Forum
LOL! I could say the same about a 460. Big Blue's 460 pulls like a tractor from idle right on up. Don't get me wrong, I think the 300 is an excellent truck engine. And I'm not a huge 460 believer. Yes, the 460 has tractor-like torque, but there's a major difference in at least one aspect - MPG. Yours gets almost exactly twice the MPG as BB. Plus, you can get to your engine under the hood to work on it. Good luck on a 460. Anyway, I think I need to own something with that 300 in it one of these days. A '50 Chevy? -
1981 F150 4WD

That is a REALLY NICE truck! It has a nice combo of options, but the bull bar doesn't appear to be from Ford, so I don't think those are factory fog lights - meaning no factory switch. (I think the lights did come in amber? Right?) And no underhood tool box. But still, a nice combo of options. -
Alternator replace, advice please

I have one, and I use it. It does save time and keeps you cleaner, but I still get messy. So the gloves get used a lot when I do that. -
Looks good! And if there's nothing wrong with the existing tranny there's no good reason to change it.

1981 F350 [good bones!]
Gary Lewis replied to 1986F150Six's topic in eBay, Craigslist, Facebook, & Kijiji Finds
Nice truck! F350's are fairly rare, but from what I've experienced are a good truck to have. Better ride than a 250, but not much heavier. -

I keep seeing these blue, black or orange things people put on their hands before doing grimey mechanic work.... While I used to wash my hands with leaded gasoline when they got greasy maybe these guys are onto something? Wish I had invested in latex and nitrile gloves manufacturers a decade or more ago! Over the last few days I've been worried that having used any number of chemicals to clean parts, like gasoline and brake cleaner, had caused a nasty bump on my left thumb. But my doctor took one look at it and said it is a digital mucus cyst, which Janey said is caused by too much computer time. Anyway, it wasn't the chemicals, nor the computer, but just "it happens". So he froze it and it is supposed to drop off in a few days/weeks. However, the chemicals probably are not good for us and it would be wise to wear gloves. But typically I only wear them to protect parts, like to keep oil off something I'm going to powder coat, and don't tend to wear them to protect my hands. Having said that, there is one job where I do wear gloves - packing wheel bearings. The synthetic grease I'm using is tenacious and very hard to get off. So I do tend to don the little clear gloves I get at Sam's for that task. -

It certainly IS dirty, nasty, and sticky. And the black synthetic brake grease would probably hold up to the temps just fine. But, it is just about as dirty, nasty, and sticky as anti-seize. And it doesn't say Anti-Seize on the tube. So I use the stuff that says it does what I want it to do. And it does it as I've not had a problem with that bolt sticking since I started using it. (However, I have had to scrub my hands many, many times 'cause dirty/nasty/sticky stuff keeps getting on them. ) -
What Do We Call THE HANGOUT? THE LOUNGE?
Gary Lewis replied to Gary Lewis's topic in Bullnose Enthusiasts Forum
I like the FORD Lounge idea, so I have changed my vote accordingly. You and two others changed their votes, Matthew. So apparently pointing out that things hadn't changed much got people to think about it as we are now in a dead-heat: 6 for The Lounge and 6 for FORD Lounge. (Yes, folks, "Whatever" translates to FORD Lounge. I cannot edit the poll so have commandeered Whatever for FORD.) -

Grease or anti-seize? I use the latter on things like that bolt as I worry that grease might melt and run out due to heat. And having that bolt seize is a huge pain. Been there, done that. -
Ok, that's what I'll do. Hopefully tomorrow.

The Truck of Doom: An Occasional Build Thread
Gary Lewis replied to Dorsai's topic in Bullnose Enthusiasts Forum
Yippee! Glad you got it on the road. What kind of sounds are you hearing? Is it just because some noises are now suppressed and the others are now able to be heard? Sounds get layered. I know that when I got Rusty I thought his tires were quiet. But then I got rid of the Flushmaster muffler and replaced it with a quieter Magnaflow and found that the tires were noisy. -
Website & Forum Suggestion Box
Gary Lewis replied to Gary Lewis's topic in Forum & Website Discussions
Guys - I've perused the Nabble support site and everything they suggest we have done. So I need to know if the Firefox browser works for you, Jim. Also, Jim, can you read Gmail using the Safari browser? That way you could click on the link and be taken directly to the post. Or, would that change the way you do everything beyond the site? Then, depending on the outcome of Jim's tests, we need to put together a list of issues that I can work on. -

I can't figure out what options got you the Trailering Special emblems. Nothing I can find explains that. -
What Do We Call THE HANGOUT? THE LOUNGE?
Gary Lewis replied to Gary Lewis's topic in Bullnose Enthusiasts Forum
Ok, we won't "discuss" religion. But we someone could ask what the Sunday school topic is, or somesuch. Anyway, here's where we are as of right now: So only three have voted for "Whatever", meaning the FORD Lounge. So, if you want that you'll need to get some of the votes changed. -
I hope I do it "right". And now I have all of the parts with which to do the brakes as today the last two pistons and the rotors came in. So tomorrow I hope to powder coat the hubs and then put them together with the new rotors by pressing in the studs. In addition I hope to assemble the calipers. But that raises a question: do I use brake fluid to lube the pistons and seals? Or is there a brake-fluid-soluble grease that should be used? I get mixed results from all the Googling I've done. Anyway, here's one new and one old rotor:
