  1. Cool! I'm in no rush at all David. My truck is still in pieces at the body shop. I am wanting one of these organizers and will have one made. I'm just curious about the width at the top and the bottom, and of course the height. I need something that will make the best use of the space, but still allow the seat to go ALL the way back against the cab. Maybe a new page in the documentation?
  2. Yep, you got good advice. But the metal spigot is really for the A/C condensation and just happens to double as a overflow for the heater core. But it is a really good idea to take your old heater core in to compare with the new one. At one point in time the wrong part was consistently in the wrong Spectra box and it would NOT fit. On the headlights, it is very difficult to take a pic of different lighting and see the difference. That's because the camera automatically adjusts for any changes in lighting. But you can put the camera on auto and take the "before" pic, then look at the pic and read the aperture and shutter info and put the camera to those settings in Manual mode. That way it can't adjust and you may be able to see the difference.
  3. Jonathan - I think John could do it. Now I just need a Bronco! But, was chromatic only available in '81 for the Broncos? It shows to have been only available in '82 for the F-Series trucks, and even then it was not nearly the same. It was Type 14:
  4. First, the firing order is determined by the cam, not the computer on the EEC-IV and V systems. (Yes, the computer can fire individual cylinders when you get to coil-on-plug ignitions, but not on these.) So the spark plug wiring order will come with the engine. As for higher flowing heads, that may be a problem. The issue is that the Speed Density systems have a table that tells the computer if the engine is spinning this fast and the air is this dense then it just ingested this much air. But if you change anything in the air inlet system the answer will be wrong. However, the computer is also sampling the air/fuel ratio and has some ability to trim the amount of fuel injected if it finds out that the AFR is lean due to more air than expected coming in. But I don't know if it has enough adjustment range to accommodate the higher-flowing heads. Perhaps someone else does?
  5. Let's take this one step at a time. First, the EVTM Jim referred to is here: Documentation/Electrical/EVTM's/1986 EVTM. And there are several sections you'll need, like Charge & Power Distribution - Diesel Engines; Headlamps; and Stop, Turn, & Hazard Lamps. The reason the truck had problems in the first place is the marginally-adequate-when-new design of the headlights circuit. It had all of the power to the headlights going through a skinny, barely adequate, wire to the switch and then out to the headlights. You might want to read the page here to see how to ensure that doesn't happen again: Documentation/Electrical/Lighting/Headlight Wiring Harness. Now to the problems. Let's start with your first statement: "I have hi and lo beams, parking brake light, 4x4 light, and nothing else." Does that mean nothing else in the truck works? Or nothing else in the lighting? I ask because when diagnosing you have to know what the symptoms are and making assumptions leads to chasing rabbits. As for the white wire, is it a replacement for an original wire? If so, what wire does it connect to? Let's leave it there and pick things up after your response.
  6. Welcome! I see that you've posted basically the same thing in the main section of the forum, which is where we usually solve problems, so will keep this to introductions as intended. Where's home? We have a map (Bullnose Forum/Member's Map in the menu) and I'd be happy to add you. Sounds like quite a truck. I'm sure when you get the onion peeled (problems sorted) it'll be extremely useful. Now I'll go over to the other post.....
  7. Welcome! Where's home? We have a map (Bullnose Forum/Member's Map in the menu) and I'd be happy to add you. Perhaps you are close to one of use and we could help? Also, it is easier to help if we know what the truck is. You've told us something about it here, but the memory of that will fade and we'll forget. But if you were to tell us what it is in a signature we'd not have to ask. On the hard starting when the engine is hot, which is what I think you said, that is frequently a bad starter. And in that case it usually drags internally when the starter gets hot and expands, which is what you were suggesting. But you said you've replaced it - right? So, then to the next thing I've seen, which is a bad connection. A cold engine is easier to start than a hot engine, and a poor connection might start the engine when cold. If you have a voltmeter try the test described here to find problems in the wires or connections: Documentation/Electrical/Voltage Drop Testing.
  8. I can replicate this issue if I scroll down (menu disappears) but then scroll back up (menu appears). When you scroll back up and hit the Documentation section, it flips upwards rather than downwards. The Bullnose Forum tab however works as it should. Yep, that does it. But, you can scroll up and use the Documentation menu - from the bottom up. So, is that acceptable?
  9. Welcome! We won't hold the fact that you have been on FTE against you. Many of us have been as well. Where's home? We have a member's map (Bullnose Forum/Member's Map) and I'd be happy to put you on it if I only knew the city where you live. But, you need some tips on posting pics here. Go to Bullnose Forum/Forum FAQ's for those. But one of the biggies is that pics cannot be more than 1Mb in size. So I copied your links, pasted them in the http section of the Insert Image popup, and clicked Big Size. (And then I stuck width="100%" in the code to make them full width.)
  10. Coffee tasting is a personal choice. But, it has been said that I'm a coffee snob. I've had coffee in supposedly the original European coffee house in Vienna, Austria. I've had Greek coffee in Athens, Greece. I've had Turkish coffee in Istanbul. I've had Espresso in Rome where it was supposedly invented. And I've been to two coffee plantations in Nicaragua and have seen it not only grown but roasted and brewed right on the grounds. (Pun intended. ) But, I brew Starbucks every day. To me that's COFFEE! Anyway, back to engines. You do have a lot of choices. But you are missing two great Ford engines - the 300 six and the 400. In my opinion, if you are just going to cruise with the truck you'd be hard pressed to do better than either the 289 or the 302. But if you are going to work it and still want a bit of economy then the 351W would be my choice. Or the 300 six. Note that I didn't include the 429 or 460. I have a 460 and it is a brute. But it is THIRSTY! So unless the truck is going to see a LOT of work, I'd go with something else.
  11. And just like that, the previous new-user count for the day is wrong. We are up to three for the day!
  12. Good idea! Just called and talked to Jennifer at Mar-K. Not sure they are going to do anything as they sell their catalogs, but I left it with her after sending her this email. We shall see.
  13. Yes, it is time to go get your truck. And the tools to do the testing are not that expensive: Compression gauge: This one from Amazon is only $20. But I never run a compression test anymore. I'd much rather run a leak-down test. Leak-down tester: Here's a bunch of leak-down testers from Amazon for prices ranging from $26 to $88. The downside is that you have to have compressed air. It doesn't take much, so if you don't have a compressor maybe a friend does? As the others have said, you can rebuild the carb yourself for not all that much. Or, buy a rebuilt one. Assuming the engine checks out good.
  14. Thanks, David. The way it looks like it'll be dispensed is as follows, assuming LMC doesn't come through with additional gift cards: Class Awards: Each of the 6 classes gets a trophy, which are to be delivered tomorrow, btw, plus one of the following: 7 quarts of Lucas oil, worth ~$50 One of two Lucas detailing kits, worth ~$25 each One of the three $25 gift cards But, if LMC comes through with one or more gift cards we'll have to figure out how to dispense 7 or more things across 6 categories. But I'd bet we are up to the challenge. Throw me in that briar patch! Other Stuff: We are going to have to set up a table under the breezeway and have someone there to get the trucks coming in signed up as well as get their windshield card filled out. And, to dispense the goody bags and the pens, literature, magnets, etc. Plus, sell the t-shirts. Jobs: And, speaking of that, I've created a list of "jobs" for which we need "volunteers" (The quotes mean that someone else might volunteer you if you don't do it yourself. ) That includes photographer, check-in table, roving salesman for the swap meet stuff, etc.
  15. It is time to document what I have in the way of swag. Then I can figure out how to distribute it. Summit Racing: Packet of Kid's Choice decals Ballots for Kid's Choice Award. The letter says "The Kid's Choice Award is a great way to have children under 15 be a part of your event. Kids sign up to vote for their favorite ride during the show - the vehicle that gets the most votes wins. Add a trophy and you have a terrific extra attraction for your event!" Packet of ~100 window placards Packet of bunches of Summit Racing stickers 100 goody bags 1 - 3' x 8' Summit Racing banner NPD - National Parts Depot: ($50) 5 NPD T-shirts in X-Large 36 catalogs for 1948 - 1979 Ford trucks 20 catalogs for 1980 - 1996 Ford trucks 2 $25 gift coupons Rock Auto: ($25) 50 magnets, some of which have Ford trucks on them. 50 fliers 1 $25 gift coupon 4 Wheel Parts: ($109.48) 7 quarts of Lucas synthetic 10W-30 oil ($48.93) 1 Lucas SlickMist Fast & Easy Detailing Kit ($26.99) 1 bottle each of SlickMist Interior Detailer, Fast & Easy Speed Wax, and Tire & Trim Shine ($24.97) LMC (Long Motor Company): Nothing's come in yet. Leftovers from FORDification show in Anderson, MO on June 8th: Evolutionary Rides: Top Notch Floors For Top Notch Trucks (48-79 F-Series) Bunches of fliers Bunches of business cards QA1: High Performance Driveline & Suspension (All they have for Ford trucks are shocks for drag racing) 50 gillion catalogs 2 gillion stickers 1 gillion ball-point pens
  16. Cookeville. Never heard of it. Oh wait, the Starbucks is about 1 mile north of the interstate about half way between the two exits? Our daughter and family used to live in N'ville and our son and family lived in DE and/or VA. So we know I-40 rather well. Leave N'ville early in the morning, stop in Cookeville for coffee & pastries, and keep on keeping on. Anyway, you are literally on the map. But, a suggestion: You told us your name is David, but at my antiquated age of 72 that won't stick for long. How 'bout placing that info in your sig?
  17. Dog? Good try, but thatโ€™s Labrador. ๐Ÿ˜
  18. Hey Jon, I was curious about the stripe differences. The 1981 brochure says that the Freewheelin' stripes were either the outlined pin stripes, or the full side decals that were either Tri-Colored or Chromatic. Were the tri-color and chromatic actually one in the same thing? It is interesting that this (http://www.garysgaragemahal.com/bronco-tape-stripe-codes.html) says there was a Type 6 Chromatic on the Broncos only one year - 1981. That is my favorite year, but...... Man, I wonder if John, my paint/body man, could replicate that in paint?
  19. Welcome! Good to "meet" you. One of our many sayings is "pics or it didn't happen". So, when you get the truck you might want to start a thread/topic in the main section about it, replete with many pics. 429/C6 vs 289/302/C4 is an interesting choice. So, where in "Middle TN"? We have a member's map (Bullnose Forum/Member's Map in the menu and I'd be happy to add you if I knew the town.
  20. Have you checked to see that you actually have two streams of gas squirting into the carb when you hit the throttle? Pull the air cleaner and look down into the carb as you hit the throttle - with the engine off. I've had the nozzles on the 2150 plug due to debris in the fuel, and that can cause the problems you describe. To unplug them I use a strand of copper wire from a multi-strand piece. Most copper is hard enough to push the debris out w/o damaging the brass shooters.
  21. Not a bad price - if the parts are really there. But, they never are, so.....
  22. Gary, On here, my stuff is your stuff;) Jonathan - I would like to incorporate Dave's approach, so have created a Metal Floor tab and added a few words about Dave's work as well as a link to his thread. But it is going to take some time finding all the bits and pieces that are woven through that thread and create the verbiage to go with the pictures. Dave - If you had the time to point me to the appropriate posts that would help. Cory - Thanks.
