  1. The level of the truck, meaning base, XL, XLT, or Lariat had nothing to do with A/C since it was an option - with one exception. At least in '85 the Explorer Package D came with A/C. But none of the other trucks. The driver's side is easy to put vents on, just by changing out the instrument bezel. But they won't connect to anything unless the rest of the HVAC duct work is in the dash. However, if there aren't vents on the passenger's side then then truck probably didn't come from the factory with A/C. I say "probably" as it is possible someone swapped a non-A/C dash in. Instead, I'll bet your truck came with dealer-installed A/C. There were several different models of that, but some of them had under-dash vents. The real question is what is under the hood. If you gave us a shot of the area of the firewall on the passenger's side, from the engine out to the hood hinge, we might be able to tell you what you have. That's 'cause the firewall for a factory A/C truck is different from a non-A/C truck. So the A/C plenum for dealer-installed air is different from factory air. The illustration below shows a factory A/C system:
  2. Yes, it will be a whole lot easier. But we all need to share our experiences with it, like the resizing option. I saw it and used it - once. But can't find it again. And, if someone has a similar shortcut for other devices, please let us know.
  3. Yes, bad grounds are the scourge of the Bullnose trucks. There were changes to the grounds over the Bullnose era, but the big changes came around 1990. So when I re-wired Big Blue I added a bunch of grounds. So far, no problems. But glad you got it figured out. Now you just have to fix the ground.
  4. Looking good! But the good dome light and screws will show up as soon as you use other screws to put the boots on, so you might as well go ahead.
  5. Well, that is interesting. The first time I used the wand I was given an opportunity to change the file size, but it doesn't seem to give me the same oppo on other pics. Anyway, to give y'all a how-to on what GSMBlue suggested, here's a screenshot from my phone showing a picture I want to post and the Edit button in the upper right corner. Click Edit: Then click on the "wand": And then click "Done":
  6. I've updated Big Blue's map to include where he was made - Twin Cities. And I cropped it so there's less white space, which makes it easy for even these old eyes to read.
  7. Ahhh! You still have the cast iron intake. Then hot-tanking it might be the right approach. As for that manual, I'm sure it would be a fun read. Somewhere I have some old amateur radio books that I'd basically memorized to get my license. And, I think I still have my Heathkit (DX100 I think) transmitter and Knightkit R100A receiver - both of which use tubes.
  8. Pete - Sorry, I missed your question about freeware. But it looks like you figured it out. GSMBlue - Can I move your post to the new thread entitled Discussion On How To Properly Orient & Size Pictures. Pete - Once I do that and delete my posts you may want to clean up or delete some of yours to get this thread sorted out.
  9. I know this forum is a pain with regard to uploading pictures. That one thing causes more problems on here than anything else. So let's have a discussion about how best to do that. But first, here are the two main issues: Image Orientation: In the old days it was obvious which way we should hold a camera. But now that we use our phones as cameras it isn't so obvious. However, the camera knows which way you are holding it and encodes that orientation in the EXIF info in the picture's data. And when smart devices view that picture they automatically re-orient the picture so it looks like it should. Unfortunately our forum isn't smart and it doesn't read the EXIF data. So if you didn't hold your phone "right" when you took your picture it will be sideways or upside down on the forum. And the way to fix that is with software - which we will discuss here. File Size: There's also a max file size when uploading pics to the forum of something less than 1 Mb. But most phones take a much larger picture than that, so you have two choices: First, you can skinny the file size down yourself in some software on your computer or your phone. Or you can let the forum do it by clicking one of the three "Resize" buttons in the Insert Image" dialog: Small; Medium; or Big. However, even Big makes your picture less than full screen, so if you want it full screen you'll have to do it yourself. Given that, let's talk about ways to fix the orientation and make the file size smaller. And this morning GSMBlue posted in another thread a good idea for iPhones, so I'm going to move his post here - if he agrees.
  10. Yes, I think the hot tank might be too much for aluminum. That's why I was thinking to block off the carb port, point the runners in the air, and fill them with acetone or somesuch. You could then block the top of the runners with something to minimize evaporation, and then come back periodically to stir and top up. As for the ham license, yes it required study. But I actually learned it - because I wanted to. I remember about 5 years later walking up to a guy who was studying for his final in Electronics. I looked over his shoulder and said "5-tube superhet". He wheeled around and said "How do you know that!?!?!?" Duh! I pointed out the 5 tubes, then started explaining what the 35W4 rectifier did, the 50C5 amplifier did, etc. He was incredulous. And the difference was in "wanting to". He "had to" and I "wanted to". That makes all the difference. And looking back on it, that explains Mrs. Boxburger. She was a "townie" in our little college town that was taking math courses because she wanted to. We hated her because she blew us away on the tests. Fast forward about 50 years and I was Mrs. Boxburger. I took a community college course on machine shop, and the kids surely hated me. I know that 'cause the teacher said they did. On the final I got done and no one else was done, so I put my answers to the side, took the test again, and compared. Exactly the same. I turned it in and went out in the shop. Along comes the teacher and said I didn't miss a thing. Next comes a guy from Poland who asked what I put on such and so question, and I told him. He asked where I got that and I told him it was in the book. He said "You read the book??????" I didn't have the heart to tell him that the night I got the book I skimmed it from cover to cover. And as we did each chapter I re-read that chapter and did the exercises on my little lathe-mill-drill machine.
  11. I guess I've never seen them, so they must be rare. But none of the many Bullnose trucks I've purchased has come close to the $2,695.80 they want for two body panels. And shipping is another $400! Tabco has the rear wheel arch for $89.75, so two of those would be ~$180. Granted they are smaller panels than the NOS ones, but then most trucks rust out above the wheelwell, which this includes. I'm just astounded at the price!
  12. That’s a very helpful tip! I’m going to try it here and then post up a how-to on that. Here’s a shot I just took with the iPhone upside down. Then I hit Edit, the wand, and Done. At that point it showed “Actual Size = 3.1 Mb”. That’s obviously way over the 1 Mb limit, so I clicked Actual Size and it gave me options. I picked 452 KB and it saved it. And here ‘tis, right-side up and full width:
  13. I can provide some links but they might not be to the exact ones I bought as I bulked up and ebay doesnt go back far enough on purchases to get the exact vendors but most of them were vendors from China as I was able to buy them in 50 to 100 piece packs while the ones sold from mostly california in 2 to 10 packs are the same chinese bulbs that they get the bulk packs and break them down. But for the T10 I pick up ones like this in the bulk pack. 14. Didn't mean it as a correction. I was sure I was missing something. But boy, those things are expensive!
  15. I didn't think of that, Shaun. And I also didn't think to save the map configuration. So I'll have to recreate both maps and add the assembly plant info. Thanks. Larry - Look at the difference in size of yours vs mine. By clicking Big it makes the picture 750 x 750 pixels. Mine is 5285 x 3762 pixels, which ensure it'll be full width on the screen. I can read my legend. Can you read yours?
  16. That's a cool idea, Larry. Here's the map for Big Blue. (Note that when you download it'll be a .png and probably too big to load directly. I opened it in Photoshop and saved it as a .jpg at about 500kb.) And here's the map for Dad's truck:
  17. Thanks, Rusty. But could you provide some links? The reason is that there are a zillion different LED bulbs and, as Daniel said, it is a bit of trial and error to find which ones work well in what housing. So if you know what works we need to document it. And, by the way, I'll caution about using LED bulbs in the brake/tail housing if you have a Tekonsha P3 brake controller. Apparently that controller, and maybe plenty of others, expect the brake light bulb to be a significant resistance load. I couldn't get the controller to work correctly and finally traced it to the LED's. As soon as I went back to incandescent bulbs the controller worked fine.
  18. Mine is positioned here which I am going to plug with a O2 sensor plug. That is CLOSE!
  19. Correct, on a factory fuel injection system and if I had one that is what I would do as well. Holley like FiTech isnt capable of reading both banks with individual sensors and they state to place the sensor so many inches from the collector which means they want the single sensor to read just one bank. Not sure if there would be an adverse effect moving the sensor to read both banks but from my understanding the father you get from the collector the more lag time you have for adjustments and the closer you are the less lag time you have for adjustments but too close and the heat kills the O2 sensors so you have to find a good compromise between lag time and not getting too hot. I dont know how hot my headers will have the exhaust at the O2 sensor location in the collector but considering I will be doing highway driving quite a bit at 75 mph @ 2,750 rpm ideally that could kill the O2 sensor as well. My O2 bungs are in the reducers or adapters that connect the headers to the exhaust pipes. Right now I'm only using one and it is for the wide-band AFR meter. But when I put the EEC-IV EFI system on I'll use those for the EFI system and have to add one downstream for the AFR meter.
  20. Guessing that is for a style side bed non-dual wheel truck? Dave ---- Yes, the "99" is Styleside. A Flareside is "83".

  22. Yes, there is a TON of info in there! Good reading and re-reading. I've scanned it, read it, and am about to re-read it. I'm especially interested in the side marker lamps 3x brighter and make them work in conjunction with the turn signals. If I'm going to be pulling the headlight doors to put in new headlights I might as well do that at the same time. And, put brighter bulbs in the turn signals. And maybe make them DRL's. But in that email Daniel said "With relays in the system it's tempting to grab for big wattage numbers (100/90, etc), but for a good collection of sturdy reasons it's usually counterproductive at best; more info on request." So I asked him to explain that, and his response makes a lot of sense:
  23. Pete - A quick response as I await the start of No Time To Die. Rotate the pics in an app and save them with a new name. It remembers the old name and won’t reload.
