Re: 1980 F350 4X4 C6 Project

I pulled the axel pivot bushing out today.  It was probably the worst one I’ve seen yet.  I think I’m going to go with polyurethane for the axel pivot bushings and standard rubber for the shackle bushings.  Obviously new springs will come with rubber bushings.

Yikes!  That is BAD!  You are going to make a major improvement in the handling of the truck when you get done.

Re: 1980 F350 4X4 C6 Project

I’ve been evaluating what to do for springs and now that I have that semi figured out, I ordered some parts to get the front end put back together.  I have a question about the mounting style.  The original shock (quite possibly from 1980) has the bolt in the bottom eye and it is not removable.

The new shock is an open eye on the bottom.

Is this as simple as getting some grade 8 hardware from the store and bolting it up or is there special hardware needed?

Yes, it is basically that simple.  However, the hardware needs to be a close fit, and if I remember correctly that is a metric bolt...

Yep, that bolt is N606084 and that is an M12 70mm long and it is a 9.8, which is roughly a G5.  So you might be able to get a 1/2" bolt in there.  I don't know.

Thanks Gary!  I’ll see what I can find to fit.

I have another bolt question.  My spring bolts and my U bolts measure (with a manual caliper) M14 x 2.5.  I am searching for something to clean the threads with before I put everything back together.  That size doesn’t seem to exist.  I can find M14 x 2.  Is M14 x 2.5 even a valid size?

I don't see an M14 x 2.5 in anything I can find online.  Are you sure it isn't SAE?

At this point it could be anything.  I figured it was metric because a 21mm socket fits the nut perfectly.

I'm pretty sure they are 9/16 fine thread. when no other is available use a wire brush in a drill. if the nuts came off you can expect them to go back easy enough.

According to the master parts catalog it is bolt number N800991-S2.  I'm not sure where to find Ford's official description for that bolt but this listing on Ebay says it is a M14 x 130mm.

I wish it would say what the thread pitch is.

Go to Documentation/Reference/Standard & Utility Parts Catalog.  But note the instructions at the top of the page on opening the file in another browser tab.  Doing that will let you search for N800991 and you'll find it on Page 42, with all of its dimensions.

M14 x 2mm it is!  I didn't even know that fastener document was on the site.  Thanks for teaching me how to fish!

Re: 1980 F350 4X4 C6 Project

Atlas75
I have most of the passenger side front suspension reassembled.  I now have another issue...with everything being new (bushings and spring) there is a fair amount of positive camber.

Everything is hand tight at this point and I have moved the truck back and forth a few times to let the suspension settle.  There is one part that seems like an alignment shim and I am wondering if I should remove it to help with the camber.  It is the angled shim between the spring pack and the axel tube.

The master parts catalog shows it here:

It appears that the drivers side does not have this shim.  Should it be as simple as removing this shim and getting the correct camber bushing around the upper ball joint to correct the camber?  Or is there something else going on here?

If you had just took it off the jackstands, drive it forward 5-10 feet then see how it looks.

Did that.  I moved it back and forth about 5 times (at least 10 feet each time) to let the suspension settle.  I took the photo after I moved the truck.

Did you take the pic after moving it backwards?  These trucks do odd things with the front suspension when rolling backwards.

Re: 1980 F350 4X4 C6 Project

Atlas75
I found this on an alignment site.

Apparently those shims are for adjusting caster.  I'm guessing that the new spring has changed the caster significantly so I am going to remove the shim and see what happens.

It sounds like the newer upper ball joint bushings are a combination camber/caster adjustment.  I need to read up on those and see how they work.

There's an eccentric that adjusts the caster and camber.  I used this one on Big Blue with his D60 front axle, but there are ones for the TIB and TTB front ends as well.
