Re: The Return of Rusty

ClayJ

I've found the oil seal and have it coming. Looking at the shop manual I see in the breakdown there is a "sealing washer". Gary do you have a part # for this washer out of the MPC? With nomenclature like sealing washer I'm assuming I'll need to replace it. Also, what's your recommendation for RTV? I see they are calling for D6AZ-19562-A on other parts of the T-Case but can't find the callout for the yoke.

Side note: Torque Spec for the mount nut is 90-130 ft lbs.

Clay - Good question.  And one for which there was no answer in our documentation.  But there will be in a bit.  In the interim here's the info.  And since your t-case is probably an E1 the part number for the seal is surely E1TZ 7B215-A.  Right?

Do you put the RTV on the splines?

Yes, clean the splines very well, coat them with RTV. Put some on the yoke’s splines, and slide them together.

On the BW1345 it doesn't call for RTV on the rear splines but does on the front splines.  But I missed that step in front and had a leak.  So I pulled the yoke, cleaned, and RTV'd the splines and that stopped the leak.

Then when I discovered I'd not torqued the rear properly I RTV'd those as well, even though I'd not had a leak.

Re: The Return of Rusty

ClayJ
Hey fellas, it's been a bit since I posted about Rusty. Well he's been putting in work around the house and my local area with no issues until today. The old Cooper 31x10.5R15s he's been wearing finally failed on me. I was pulling my small trailer to make a drop off at the local dump and my left rear tire shucked the tread like a big ear of corn 🌽. I was able to pull over safely but not without giving the guy behind me a show. Looks like the tread took out the splash guard as well and knocked my bedside moldings loose. I didn't see any other damage of note. So tomorrow I have new tires going on as well as an order to LMC for the splash guard damage. I had been planning to replace the tires prior to deer season but necessity now dictates new rubber.

Glad you got it shut down without more damage. That must have been quite a show.

What tires are you going with?  Those were pretty noisy.

Re: The Return of Rusty

I liked those Coopers pretty well and the road noise didn't really bother me. I'm sticking with the 31x10.5R15 size and going with another aggressive looking Cooper.

I like the Cooper Maxx ST’s on Big Blue, but haven’t heard about the Evolution. Hope you like them.

Rusty's new shoes! Didn't realize how hard and loud the old Coopers were until I drove with the new Cooper Evolution M/T tires. Looked down at the speedo and was doing 75! Whoa boy! Stayed with 31x10.5R15. Quieter and much smoother than the old rubber.

Glad they are quieter.  Wasn't going to say it, but the old ones were LOUD!  When I got the truck it had a Flowmaster on it and it was noisy so I didn't notice the tires.  Replaced it with a Magnaflow and that fixed the exhaust noise but then I realized how noisy the tires were.

So I can imagine how much better it is with quieter tires.

Re: The Return of Rusty

ClayJ
Rusty has been behaving well and lured me into a false sense of security. Checking fluid levels I noticed the front differential was low this morning. I added some fresh gear oil until it was spilling out the service port on the front and reinstalled the plug. In the time it took me to get a fresh rag oil was pooling underneath the differential. Low and behold I have a driver side axle seal just pouring gear oil. Very frustrating. I'd say it took half a quart of gear oil to fill up the diff.

Bummer!  You are going to discover that it isn’t a lot of fun replacing that seal.
