thelastkeg
Hello, I just happened across this website today while searching for information on my recently acquired truck. I've already enjoyed browsing through the great information on the bullnoses. I've been the owner of my Papaw's 1985 Ford F250 for about 8 years now. It's been in our family since the early 1990s. It's sky blue, with a 351W and C6, and has about 130,000 miles. A few days ago I bought an 86 F150 with the 300, 4 spd, and 4x4. It was purchased from the family who have owned it since new. The immediate need is replacing the freeze plug behind the flywheel, so any advice on that would be appreciated. It could also use the gasket between the intake and exhaust manifolds replaced. Gary Lewis
Welcome! As David said, nice trucks. We have a map (Bullnose Forum/Member's Map in the menu), so do you mind if we add you? Florence is close enough. The freeze plug behind the flywheel will be work as the t-case & tranny have to slide back, if not come out. But it is straight forward. As for the exhaust manifold, from what Myrl tells us Ford discontinued using gaskets on the 300 six due to the manifolds needing to use the block as a heat sink. I think he said they now use graphite grease.

thelastkeg
Thanks for the compliments. I've removed a lot of transmissions when parting vehicles out before, but I've never reinstalled one. I've also never fooled with freeze plugs. Hopefully it won't be too bad. That's interesting about the gasket between the manifolds. I've ordered a manifold gasket set and it looks like it comes with a square gasket to put in there. I'll keep that in mind when I get them apart and may go with the grease. I'm just hoping none of the bolts/studs snap off.

There is a gasket where the exhaust manifold meets the bottom of the intake manifold That is a real nice pair of trucks you have there, and keeping it in the family is one of our favorite things to do. FuzzFace2
Welcome! I am a little late but welcome. If you have the freeze plug behind the flywheel leaking I would also do the ones behind the manifolds. When I got mine back running after years of rebuilding it from the ground up I had 1 leaking. When I started looking where the coolant on the floor was from I seen there was also a rubber type plug installed. So besides the rubber and the leaking one I found 1 other that was thin so was good I replace them all. As for the gasket for the manifolds to head I used them as I did not hear of the heat issue on the exh manifold. Now I also have to say I am running EFI split exh. manifolds and Y pipe for better flow so don't know if they have the same issues or not? I am running the stock factory intake & carb. As said nice trucks Dave ----

New freeze plug installed behind the flywheel. The flywheel was very pitted and the clutch looked pretty worn so I'm planning to replace those while they're out. I would like to do anything I can to not have to remove this stuff again anytime soon. The odometer shows about 75k. Knowing it's history and looking at the pedal and floor wear, I would have assumed it hasn't rolled over. But the condition of the clutch and flywheel make me question that. In any case, hope to have all the new parts installed next weekend and then I'll focus on addressing the exhaust leaks.
