Dave - While Big Blue's speedo has always fluttered or bounced while driving, all the tests I'm talking about where I saw differing readings were done on my lathe, which has a 2 HP AC motor feeding through gears. And the speedo shaft was only about 4" long. So I'm confident there was no variation in the RPM. As for the condition of the speedometers, they were all remarkably clean inside. No oil, no dirt, NADA. But let me explain my previous comments. The pic below shows what I'm calling various things. The coupling has no physical connection from the drive side, on the right, to the driven side, on the left. It appears to use air as the medium to transmit torque to the driven side, and that is balanced by the clock spring, and the bias on it is what "calibrates" the speedo. As you'll see in the next pic, the tolerances are tight in the coupling, so I'm thinking that over the thousands of miles the input bearing has worn, allowing the drive part of the coupling to get closer or farther away from the driven part. And that fits as when I pushed on that brass part of the input shaft on the far right I could cause the speed to go up or down some depending on which way I pushed. As said, the tolerances are pretty tight in the coupling, but none of the ones I have are dirty in there at all. No oil, grease, dirt, etc. So the only thing I can come up with that would change while the input shaft is spinning is the position of the shaft. And, as said, pushing on it certainly caused changes in the readout on all but the NOS speedo. Also shown in the pic below is the output shaft bearing. I thought that it being dirty or dry might make a difference so I lubed Big Blue's with a very light machine oil, but that made no difference that I could detect. So I think the wear is in the input shaft's bearing.
  2. Dave - That's why our page at Documentation/Electrical/PMGR Starter Wiring just shows how to use the existing fender-mounted starter relay. But some of us have gone to the PDB's and a cube relay, which also works.
  3. John - Here's the package I'll ship to you on Monday. It includes: Plastic Piece: This one is drilled for both the smaller and larger boosters, and it fits both the one off Big Blue as well as the one off Dad's truck, so I'm sure it'll fit. Unfortunately it is in black. Regulator/Gauge: I assume you have compressed air with the standard fittings? This regulator and gauge are low pressure, and Jim is right, you don't want to put more than maybe 5 psi on the master's reservoir. I think I used 4 psi. But, be careful as that regulator is probably set to 7 or 8 as it is what I use for powder coating and 8 is about the magic pressure for that. Cap & Hoses: The cap should fit based on your pic, on the left, and mine on the right, below. And the extra hose is what I used to run from the bleeder screw to the catch can. As said, here are the caps, yours on the left and mine on the right. And, I'm going to mark this task "Unassigned". (The task in my mind was to get the bits together, not ship them. )
  4. So, what brand carb did you put on? Seriously though, that looks like it might be right below the fuel line. Didn't you say something about adapting one type of fitting to another to go from the Eddy to the Holley?
  5. Ok, sports fans, to this point all of the discussion has been from the admins. But I'd like to see comments from all of y'all, inc admins, on the questions below. However, let me first state what the feature is and does: The thinking is that there are times when we see that a certain person probably knows the answer or needs to see this post, but we aren't sure he will so if we "assign" it to him he'll get an email notification. So the questions to y'all are: Is it workable to have the whole membership list in the dropdown? That's the only way I can see to allow all of you to use this function. See below for more on that. Does it bother you that there are now two additional columns on the main page for Priority and Assignee? We MAY be able to remove those, but aren't sure and it would take some work. And, by the way, having those columns appears to take away the "Views" column, although I doubt that's an issue. I set work groups up on the TEST Forum and then took this screenshot. As you can see, you'd have to use the slider to find the person, but it isn't too onerous. I could turn it on here to all members if we want to have a play with it. THOUGHTS????

  7. Received at level 2. I clicked on the bottom link and it took me right to the assignment post that Scott sent me quoted above. Not the thread starter at the top, his very post. Jim - At 10:48 CST last night I "unassigned" it, which took the notice at the top of the thread and on the main page away. But you'd already gotten the email(s) calling your attention to the thread and the specific post. John - Yes, it takes you to a post, but marks the whole thread as assigned.
  8. That's cool! I see the assignment among the many threads on the main page and at the top of my initial post. Looks too like I have the ability to unassigned, reasign to different person, and change priority. Yes, as an admin you do have. You should also have assignment notices for the Work Groups threads. Yes?

  12. Yes, but it sends a link to the post in the email notification. So from what I can see while it says at the top of the thread to whom it was assigned, which we know will only show the last assignment, it does direct the person to the right post. But I think it is of use only for a limited set of people. I've not figured out yet who can assign, but I think anyone can. However, I think if we were able to assign things to any member the list would be unusable. Also, notice that when you reply the Assignment dropdown says Assigned and it shows it is assigned to John/Machspeed. So really you can only assign things to a single person, and when I posted assigning to other people it was actually re-assigning. And if I set it to Unassigned when I post then it takes the assignment away. So, if I leave it at Assigned and Machspeed and John come along he could answer the question and mark it unassigned. Right?
  13. It is interesting that while I've assigned this to three different people, at the top of the thread it just shows the last assignment. Anyway, I'll assign this to John.

  16. I think you'll like it, assuming that my cap is the same size as yours. Sure makes bleeding the system easier. And, by the way, I've "assigned" this to me, which means I'm supposed to get an email about it that I can follow up on tomorrow. Besides, I want to see how this new feature works.
  17. I just discovered a feature of Nabble that I didn't know is there - work groups. I'll include the detailed info from Nabble on how this works down below, but I want to try it out as I think it could be very useful. For instance, many times we've known who has answers to questions but don't have an easy way to alert them. But I think this will allow us to do it. For testing purposes I've just set it up so that only our admins/moderators can be "assigned" something. For instance, we have a question that Bill/85lebaront2 knows the answer to, so we "assign" it to him and he gets an email that, hopefully, has a link to the post. Let's give this a try. I'm going to assign this to Jim, meaning I hope he will reply and assign it to another admin, and so on. Let's see if this will work.

  20. Yes, a fuel-fed fire is really hard to put out. Years ago we were selling our house in PA and people called to say they were coming to see it. As it was in November and we had leaves down in the yard, I jumped on the mower to mulch them. Halfway down the hill I realized the mower was going left no matter what I did so stopped as I was being taken into the wild rose bushes. When I jumped off I smelled burning leaves and realized that the leaves had packed up under the mower to the point they'd not only lifted the front tires off the ground, but they were jammed up against the exhaust and were smoldering. And then they burst into flames, so I ran to get my fire extinguisher. When I got back, which wasn't long, things really "took off". In their infinite wisdom the "engineers" had put the plastic fuel tank directly above the exhaust, and sure enough the tank melted through. To borrow a phrase, suddenly we added fuel to the fire. And my puny little extinguisher didn't make a dent in the fire. Nor did the one my neighbor brought. Yes, in a truck fuel fire maybe the engine will die or be shut off and the fuel will quit flowing so the fire will be smaller. But if it is a carb'd vehicle you still have the gas in the carb. And there's all the other combustible materials under the hood. So a fire in a vehicle isn't going to be easy to put out. Oh yes, the people drove by the house and wondered why I was burning my mower.
  21. No Corey, there's truth there and that's what I'm looking for. It would break my heart for my truck to burn in front of me. Prior to having the truck painted, I only had public liability insurance on it, which would pay nothing in the event of a fire. I reluctantly put Hagerty Insurance on it after having the body all done...and I say reluctantly only because of the limitations they put on the use of the vehicle. The good thing is that it is currently covered for what I have invested* in it. It's bad enough that the street value of the truck is only 1/2 of what I have invested in it...or if I was power ball lucky, maybe 2/3 of the value, but when and if I sell it, that is fine as it will be my choice and I'm OK with it. To see it burn in a parking lot and turn into $0 value in minutes would be a tough pill to swallow. I agree - I'd be really, REALLY sad to see it burn. I doubt I could get half of what I have in it, but I'm ok with that as I'm not selling. As for the fire extinguisher, I plan to put one in the behind-the-seat storage unit. But I haven't and must! On the insurance, I talked to a friend that is an insurance agent and he's researching what we might be able to do to get decent insurance but still be able to use the vehicle. After all, I built it to use so Haggerty is out.

  23. I just saw the same post. Sad! One fire starter is the 2G alternator that came out in '86. They, or the the connections thereunto, are suspect. But my guess is that a lot of the problems are due to fuel system leaks. For instance, some of the carbs have vulnerable places, like accelerator pumps that can leak externally.
  24. Been there, done that. Was very upset with myself. In my case it was the thermostat that slipped. But at least you have the right perspective. It'll work out. And at least the radiator and core support fit correctly. Well done.
