I had a visitor to the shop on Monday - Prashant. He's driving his '86 F150 w/a 460/ZF5 from Atlanta to Colorado, and stopped by to see me. But when we went out into the shop he spied something that he didn't think belongs. Can any of you ID it?

It looks suspiciously like a valve cover for a turbocharged Chrysler engine.

I thought you'd enjoy seeing a pic of Prashant holding it. He'd just told me you've been helping him, but I think he referred to you as "the guy in Virginia. The one with a 460 with EFI like you are going to do." I said "Oh, you mean Bill Vose? That's his valve cover."

Just like stray cats, your friends keep coming back!!! P.S. Prashant, that is not directed at you as there are a number of us who make an annual trek to Skiatook, OK. P.P.S. How was your truck's gas mileage, Prashant? |

I doubt Prashant is going to see these posts. He doesn't seem to get on the forum nor know what's on the website. He had a friend with him, Greg, and they were asking some questions that are answered by pages on the site. So I showed them, and Greg was quick to say "That's it!". I got the feeling that Greg will bring Prashant back to the site when they get to CO, but maybe not the forum.
As for MPG, I'm not sure that it will be all that good. They said that they'd hit 98 MPH and the truck just didn't want to go any faster.

That's depressing. I have a few 3-digit driving awards for my 3-ton Bricko with a 6-banger. |

I have no idea how fast Darth will go, both my late wife and son have had him with the original 85 mph speedometer pegged, Interestingly I have gotten some of my best mileage cruising at 70 mph (1900 rpm) or 75 (2050 rpm). The E4OD really helps with that.

I suspect a lot of tuning needs to be done with the 460. It has a Holley on it and I don't think there's been any jetting work done.
But you can be sure the MPG is well south of 10, and maybe closer to 5.

After some more driving, I've been getting 11.5 to 12.0 MPG with the new Holley. Driving 60-65 MPH.
That's horrible to some, but better than before when I couldn't get over 9.0 MPG! I'm happy!

Horrible? 27.8 - 33.3% improvement!

That range of 11.5 to 12 is about what Big Blue gets, but he's got a T19. So you are doing quite well getting that with a C6. And, that is a good improvement.

Darth went from a solid 10 with the Holley 4180 and C6 to 11-12.5 with a very low compression EFI engine and E4OD. Once I get the new 9.3:1 compression 466 in I will see what it gets.

That makes it sound better! 65 MPH might be a stretch, 65 seems to be the speed that separates the MPG. IIRC I ran 70 and a little over and was down to 9 or less. I try to set the cruise at 63 or 64, sheez, splitting hairs and thinking too much!

There is a former Ford Engine Development Engineer, The Frenchtown Flyer, who has stated that the "magic" limiting point with our trucks is 62 mph. After which, the gas mileage goes downhill, fast! |
That's good to know! I should stay at 60 and not get in a hurry...yeah right!

2014 55-62 mph with no aerodynamic modifications = 21.93 mpg [highest tank = 23.26 mpg]
2015 55-62 mph with aerodynamic modifications = 24.13 mpg [highest tank = 25.72 mpg] 2016 55-70 mph [weighted towards 65-70] with aerodynamic modifications = 22.05 mpg [highest tank = 23.46 mpg] 2017 Missing data due to having driven another vehicle. 2018 65-75 mph [closer to 75] with no aerodynamic modifications] = 19.87 mpg [highest tank = 21.3 mpg] If you look at the data [above], and compare 2014 against 2018, you will see what a little speed does with regard to gas mileage. This is my truck being driven to and from Skiatook, OK. |
Indeed! I remember reading about your aero. mods..

Your visitor gets around, he called me today, he blew a water pump on the 460 halfway between Petersburg and South Hill VA on I-85. He wanted to know if I had a good source, he had already been through Advance, AutoZone and O'Reilly.
He found one at NAPA, and was getting the truck towed back to Petersburg then had a bolt that wouldn't come out and manged to break the timing cover. He has a plan to get it roadworthy again.
