Rust

hubcityford
What do I do for areas that are starting to rust? I want to keep truck as original as possible However I know nothing lasts forever and something will have to be done. I got issues in bed and tailgate (worse places) and then some surface spots here and there.  Do I just need to take to body shop and let them do there work or is there something I can do to fend it off?

Thanks
Jeremy

If it's very light sometimes you can sand it down and paint. But usually once bubbles start theres no saving it. Cut out and new metal is the only way.

For surface rust the best answer is to use a phosphoric metal prep before painting.

Rust is like cancer. Unless you get it all, it will come back and spread.
By using something like Ospho or Kleenstrip's 'concrete and metal prep' you convert iron oxide to iron phosphate (which is more or less inert)

The thin liquid will be drawn into pinch welds and flanged edges fixing the problem where it starts.

If panels have deep pitting or rust through, you really need to cut it all out and weld in solid metal.

If you stay tuned i'll show how bad it can get.

I guess so.  I saw the pics of his father's truck, but I assumed that happened over a decade or more.  Man, to have that happen over night is scary!

That's what salty slush covered boots will do, because of Ford's gasket lip.

Jim - I wonder if WeatherTech has mats for our trucks yet.  That might help.

David - It was appropriate.

I don't think WeatherTech does, but HUSKY has some [see link]:

Yeahbut, that's for an '86.  Mine's an '85.

Seriously though, I like those.  May have to get a set for Big Blue when we start using him.  Thanks!

Do you have them?  Or just doing research?

You want to come do it for me Dave?

I've been here before....
But after the heavy rain last night, and with all the frustration (my long unused MIG was having feed problems) I'm tired of rust, mud and sharp metal.

Tomorrow is another day.
I think I'll have to go to work and make some money.

I hate when these things get drawn out.

Re: Rust

Do tell me wife but I am looking at another truck or what is left of it after a buddy gets done with his.
Its a short bed truck, no bed and the cab has normal rust and roof rust but it has a good frame / suspension I can work with it.

Will have to see what happens but I also need to get on my Javelin to keep the wife happy.
