Yep with the wing.
When I lived in CT the guy across the street had one he was rebuilding. Had to cut the back of the garage out to fit the car in once that long nose went on.

I do believe it was hot fuel.
It's the first it has done thst and yes on the gas.

Re: 81 F100 flare side custom with 300 six & T18

My truck hates me!

I wanted to take the truck to work as I have not in a while.
It started right up since the relay replace, pull the parking lights on and pull it out of the garage to let it heat up a little and to grab the last of my work stuff.

Get in hit the garage door opener and it closes, I see the park lights are on like they should be pull the knob out all the way and no head lights? I pushin and pull out again just to make sure it is out and it is WTH!
I just put in 2 new head light bulbs could they have both gone bad at the same time?
They do say to change out in pairs.

I cant find the dimmer switch in the dark, its 4am, with the Ebrake on so I pop it off, hit the dimmer and I have high beams but no low beams. Not wanting to park the truck and move all my stuff to my SUV I do a little switch a roo. I have the LMC relay kit, I was going to swap relays but in the dark I was having a hard time trying to get 1 out so I unplug the head light from the kit and plugged the trucks plug back in and I have lights now so off to  work I go!

Well almost to work and I see the dash turn signal lights dimly flashing and when they do a hear a like a little air spray and the motor skip a beat? Its not doing it all the time and not really if I hit bumps either?
Now I do have to say in my rush to get going I did not tape or secure the relay kits male plug and was wondering if that could be it? I would think it would have done something with the head lights not what was going on?

I have 2 new bulbs in my work truck just in case, and they have plastic things that fit over the connection on the bulb so I took 1 and put it on the relay male plug.
On the way home I dod not hear, feel or see (to bright at 3pm) anything so maybe that was it?

I think with power washing the engine bay water may have gotten into 1 of the relays.
So at some point I will look into why the relay kit is not working as it should.

Similar thing happened to me other evening.  Taking my son back to his mom's house.  Headlights would go off and on our their own accord.   No lows, but highs worked.

Got home was under hood.  I have the same relay kit.  Wiggle wires and I could hear the relay pop and lights off and on with it.  Got looking more closely.  The Ford wire had backed out of the connector in back of the main plug.  When it would make contact, lights on.  When it lost contact, lights off.

Check those wires.  I pushed it back in till I felt it slide securely into the other connector.  Will likely zip tie the connector together to make the connection a bit less prone to vibrating apart.

If I had posted earlier, you might have went right to it on yours.  But was kinda embarrassed that I let the connection be loose.

Thanks for the information I will give it a check.
It was really to dark at 4am to be doing any checking.
I also had to be at work on time to make my first load pick up and off load for 7am.

I had to get a new battery for the garden tractor so I could cut the way to tall grass I picked up 2 new relays and pig tails as I think the kit relays are smaller.
Tomorrow after I do the trash run and finish cutting the grass I will look into the problem.

Re: 81 F100 flare side custom with 300 six & T18

FuzzFace2
Well with help from my son I got the head light relays working again.
It was a bad relay and I am pretty sure I caused it when I power washed the engine bay as it look like the relay got water in it and water came out of the harness when we started working on it.
at first we pulled out all the tools to cut & solider the new pig tails to the harness but my son got smart so we did not need to.

He was able to remove the connectors from both plugs and put the harness wires in the new plug body and it all worked.
He then wrapped the 2 relays & plugs in electric tape to help water proof them.
When I have time Iwill make a bracket to mount the relays to and bolt it to the inner fender.
I started to make one but it broke and being it was too hot it could wait till later date.

Water in a relay would be a problem, so I'm glad you got it fixed.

Re: 81 F100 flare side custom with 300 six & T18

The other day I picked up a top of the line IGN box from NAPA and replaced the leaky one on my truck today.
Once I got the old box off I scraped off what I could of the sticky potting from the plastic fender liner.
There is still some left as it was to hot to spend more time on it.

The other day I cleaned the floor in the garage where I park the truck and thought it strange there was drops of what I thought was fiber glass rosin on the floor?
Today when changing the box I know what the drops are .... the potting from the bad box that leaked down the liner and dripped on the  floor!

I may take the truck to work tomorrow and see if that was the reason for the motor missing or a quick shut down.
I could hardly feel the miss / shut down but in the dark I could see the dash turn lights do a quick flash.
I could also hear a noise from under the hood when this would all happen.

I dont remember it happening on the way home during day light but I also took local roads home and not the high way were this showed up.

Yes, the potting makes a MESS!  I had one in a box and it ran out, causing me to throw the whole box and ignition module away.

Anyway, I hope the new one makes a big difference.

Funny it was ok when I got the truck but I seen the potting run down the liner as I was building the truck from the heat in my garage.

I also hope it fixes it.
I have also heard the noise when it misses happen when I shut the motor off.
If it was not so hot I would have gotten help to look into it more, got all weekend LOL

Re: 81 F100 flare side custom with 300 six & T18

I want to do a little more "road testing" but on the way to work yesterday it ran great, no little missing (shut down) and turn light flickering or noise.

I had to bring the work truck home and not wanting to leave the pickup at work over the weekend I took the DD and did a swap. I took local roads home, high way to work where it was doing that thing, and it ran fine.

On the way to work I seen the AFR more steady and in the upper 13's low 14's where it has been lower before. It also feels like it has a little more power in the RPM range I run in and also think the pinging is a lot less too.

But it looks like I changed out the IGN box before it left me stuck on the side of the road.

Re: 81 F100 flare side custom with 300 six & T18

Wow July was the last up day ..... what a slacker

On the turn dash lights flickering, only see it in the dark, I found when it happens but I have not looked into why? It happens when the AC compressor kicks on and off a bunch of times after each other.
The outside temp is not too hot but need the AC on so fan is on low and the temp control cut back some.
If the compressor was to stay on like when really hot out and fan on full and the compressor stays on there is no issues? I am not going to look into this deeper for now.

Most of the summer I was hitting some of the local cars & coffee meets and some shows as they started back up.
I also joined a local car club Southland Car Club. I had been tagging along to shows with them and even helped out at their show before I was a member.

A month or more I was given a spare tire and brackets. A few weeks back I after cleaning & painting I went to install before a show and found the nub that you put the lug wrench in to help lift it hit the side plate for the trailer hitch. So another weekend I took the hitch apart to swap the side plates and I also was able to set it back under the truck more as it stuck out a little to far for me.

It has gotten a little colder here and I took the truck to work 1 morning when it was 27*f and the choke would not open all the way. I marked the cap and turned it lean a little and it seams to be pretty good.
I am still working on it to get it just right but I have not had it out when that cold again to see if ok or not.

I have been hearing a EXH leak and checking it out found the inlet pipe to the muffler is pulling out of it.
I am running EFI manifolds and Y pipe into the parts truck system on back.
Because the Y pipe is 2-1/4" (1994) and the rest of the system 2" (1981) I am replacing the full system with the later 2-1/4" (1994) system. No one stocked the parts so they have been ordered and should be in Friday so maybe I will do it over the weekend?

I do have a Christmas Parade Saturday morning I can go to so the system may wait till later.

I replaced the exh system on my truck today.
The round muffler inlet pipe was pulling out of the body and why I replaced it.
I could have just replace the muffle with same and been done in no time.

I am running EFI manifolds with Y pipe no cat.
The factory pipes are 2" and the Y pipe is 2-1/4" So I went with 94 system as it is 2-1/4" but went with a performance muffler.

I had to make some mods like the hangers on the tail pipe, I cut them off.
At idle I got to say it dose not sound like a six but more like a SB.
I have not taken it for a drive yet but I think it will sound pretty good.

I will see if I can post a video will have to see if there is a "how to" on it.

Yes I did take it out today.
First outing was the weekly trash run.
You only hear (inside) a little deeper note nothing big.

A few of us in the car club I am a member of went a few towns over for a parade we put our cars / truck in. Antlers & red nose on the truck and a Santa's for me.
With my gray beard the little kids thought I was Santa LOL
There were a few that yelled nice truck.

Driving from the parade to lunch then home I had the windows open and I did not hear anything different than with the windows up on the noise. Cant say what it sounds like on a drive by?
Maybe I will have my son do that so I can hear?
Other wise I am happy as I cant have it to loud when I leave for work at 12am to 3am at times.

To post a video:

Put the video on Youtube

Get the "embed code" from Youtube by clicking on "Share"

Paste the embed code into your post on here

Tick the "Message is in HTML Format" box before posting.  BUT, when you check the box you don't get carriage returns between paragraphs so you have to click "Formatting" and then "Line Feed" to put returns in.

And I fully understand what you mean about noise.  I don't want much of it either.  Hopefully you will have exactly what you want.

I did a parade yesterday with a few of the car club members a few towns over.
With the windows down on the ride home I did not hear anything from the tail pipe so I dont really know if it sounds different or not?

Today I looked into the choke and why it was staying on when it was 27*f and took a long time to open if at 45*f. Any thing above 45*f the choke works pretty good.

I moved the cold air side of the hot air tube in closer to the motor / manifolds.
I also wrapped header wrap around the manifold & copper tube to help it get more heat as I am sure why the choke was not opening when 27* and was slow at below 45*.

I know the choke cap is getting heat from the electric side as it got hot.
The hot air tube is also getting hot and a good temp now.
Thing is it was about 70* out and I dont know when it will be cold again to give the choke a good test?

I changed out the oil psi sender as it stopped working a week ago, all good now.

I wanted to swap the temp switch? in the air filter so I could get the flapper in the snorkel to open when cold to maybe pull warm air into the carb but found the flapper valve is no good, I have vacuum to the valve.

When I had the air filter apart it was full of milk shake
The PVC was working but I did not get any suction on the fresh air side of the system
I did not have any blow by that I saw but that would be why I have a milk shake in the dip stick tube and oil fill cap.
I washed the breather but need to replace the air filter and want to replace the PVC.

Till the air filter is replaced I cant do anything with making it run leaner.
with out the filter at idle I had AFR of about 15 and with filter down to low 13's
But the truck looks pretty

Re: 81 F100 flare side custom with 300 six & T18

Today I had some time and my son was around to help me so I did some tracking of my timing curve so I hope to get a handle on the pinging.
I have a post going on here and once I have a plan I will post back here what that will be.
I need to order a Mr. Gasket dist. spring kit #925D and maybe a vacuum advance for it.

I also see my oil leak has gotten pretty bad so I took a can of brake clean the cleaned the area I think it is coming from.
I tighten the side cover bolts a little but dont think it is coming from it as it is coming from higher up.
Once clean I ran the motor and got the RPM up and sure enough found the leak .......... top of the timing cover

I will order the parts tomorrow and hope to have the timing gasket set and springs for next weekend but just remembered I have a car show so dont know when I will be able to get this done?

Picked up the timing cover gasket set, Dist. spring kit and vacuum advance unit Wed.

It lucked out I dont have to work Fri. so the plan is to do the gasket and if I have time maybe pull the Dist. and change up 1 spring and the vacuum unit.

I say time because I have a show New Years day meeting up with my car club at 11:30 and driving to the show as a group.

Enough here time to make my hot tea and move cars around to get the truck in my garage.

Happy New Year all!
