Here is another mystery I found when I was under the truck. I noticed a cut off line. It almost looks like it could be fuel line. When I went to the the back of the truck to investigate the other side of the line was just tucked in. What was this line for and why is it cut off? The frame clip holding the line looks factory.

I am going to guess that would be the rear axle vent line.

I think if you were to turn the hose around you will find it will fit the vent nipple on the axle.

If you look where the brake line down the frame and connects to the rubber hose to the axle there should be a nipple holding the other end of the hose to the axle and the 2 metal lines going to the wheels.

The hose fits on to the nipple and the hose goes up high like the clip on the frame.

You may want to pull the nipple to make sure it is clear and put it back in place, fit a rubber hose to it and fit a cheap fuel filter to the end. This will keep bugs & dirt out of the hose & axle.

That's the rear axle breather.

It is supposed to connect to the bolt that holds the brake line splitter to the rear axle.

I was going to do 27 but it seemed to much so I dropped it to 25. My manual in the fuel pump chapter says 19-27 ft-lbs.

Well, either your Ford book or my Ford book is wrong. :nabble_anim_confused: This is from the1985 factory shop manual:

Thanks Dave, I will check that when I go back under the truck and report back.

I checked in the manual where you did and it matches yours. So the manual contradicts itself. I am glad I stopped screwing the fuel filter on when I did. I saw the torque spec listed in your post. :nabble_smiley_scared:

Now question time. Why is there a can of beans in the engine compartment? And why does it leak when I crank the engine?

The leaking can of beans got worse. When I went to check on the truck after work today there was an oil puddle. I didn't expect it to give up the ghost when nothing was going on. Something about cranking the engine during fuel system test got things moving. I removed the bean can and it was empty so I was too late. I put down something to absorb the oil. When it first started leaking it was water and then today it was mostly oil.
