I understand you not wanting to sell the original 300. Still have the original in mine. Its either 160,000 or 260,000. I bought the truck from the original owners son. He wasnt very sure of mileage. But it runs great. Ran like a turd when I got it. Yanked all the california emissions crap off, upgraded to HEI, header and exhaust. Still running the original carter 1 barrel. Its not winning races, but the choke works now and it fires up in the cold. I drive it 300+ miles a week no problems with distributor gear oiling.
Understand that mine was a DAVIS UNIFIED IGNITION product from 1994. Not sure what brand yours is but hopefully they have made major improvements in 25 yrs...i get the same performance with stock Ford looks using Pertronix....and no special parts to look for at AutoZone .....thats why i have never wavered  in the 25 yrs and 20k miles

Welcome Tommy! :nabble_waving_orig:

That sure is a good looking truck!

Cool background too, having built it with your dad.

I had a motorcycle with a similar story but had to sell during one of my downsizing.

Will regret that for the rest of my life.

I'd love to hear what twin triples sound like! :nabble_smiley_wink:

I know you say it sounds like a V-8, but I can't imagine the cadence is the same.

Every 3 cylinder I've owned sounded absolutely wicked at WOT.

My HEI is Summit Racing brand. So far so good.

Jim, even though I have a true dual, I take 2.25" pipes back to an xpipe first, then through glasspacks. Mine does not sound like a V8 with the foot in the gas at anything above idle. Some people might think its a v8 when idling, most old guys will know its a six though.

Sorry Ray,

I hit the reply button to your post while thinking of Tommy's post.

Do you have a YouTube sound clip of yours with the X-pipe?

I also think he is talking about the distributor shaft bushings.

Though I do not know the internals of the I-6 as well as I do the 8's, I'm pretty sure the drive gear gets plenty of oil coming off the can.

Jim, I will take a video for you of the exhaust later today.

You can kinda hear it in this video:

Again back in 94 when all of this work was being done the Davis Unified unit did not have an oil passage drilled in the shaft...after losing two gears we called Davis about this and they said it got enough oiling without it...we immediately changed back to points style distr with the Pertronix and no more issues...the HEI conversion was all the rave back then but having ran the Pertronix in 4cyl pinto dirt track racing engines we decided to dump the HEI DAVIS unit...just my one and only experience!!
