Also, can anyone confirm if this gasket will work for me?

https://www.summitracing.com/ga/parts/fel-os34601r/applications I see in the reviews it was used on an 83, but the compatibility says 88+

That is the one piece oil pan gasket which was introduced in 1987, I believe. It replaced the drip prone 4 piece gasket from earlier. It can be used on earlier oil pans. When the pan is removed, you will see small raised areas around each hole for the mounting bolts. These raised areas helped hold the cork gasket in place. These need to be ground smooth [not difficult].

My 1986 4.9L has had the original gasket set replaced with one of these gaskets and does not leak.

Mystery solved!

Thank you David for the edification. :nabble_anim_handshake:

I can't say, as I'm no expert on the 300.

But maybe there were some bolt hole changes when it went EFI?

I know that with the 460 the water pump changed for '88, and the timing case changed because there was no more fuel pump hole in the side.

Is this also when it went to the serp single belt and reverse turning water pump and the reason for the timing cover change not the no fuel pump needed.

I remember seeing a post on the 302 covers and you could see the covers were different because of the water flow and pump used.

Dave,

Serpentine 460's don't have a RR water pump.

If you look at a belt diagram you'll see the pulley is inside the belt (don't have it on my phone)

The flow is the same.

Just the water pump neck was enlarged because of the water to oil cooler.

Bill will call these ' the grenade'

Serpentine came with the '88 model, and EFI.

Prior, Ford just put a blank plate over the hole when the 460 optioned with the Hot Fuel Handling system that incorporated in-tank pumps and a vapor separator 'T' for the return line to the tanks.

This kept cool fuel from the tanks circulating through the hot engine bay and lessening the chance of vapor lock with the mechanical fuel pump deadheaded and sitting between the PS pump and #5 exhaust.

Well I just learned something I would have thought when the belt changed the water pump would too like the 302.

Guys, you're way over my head on this one lol but I'm learning the terms and deciphering. Lots to learn....

Finished my first carb rebuild not for a motorcycle earlier. Truck fires right up without fiddling now the carb was full of crud and all the internals got dried out. Before it ran but now no pumping the pedal and trying 3 times to start. Idle still seems super high though. I need to find a good video or write up on tuning these carbs, which is something I can probably find by searching here.

I've also gotten the door locks switched, damn those are tight to get in!

New plug wires are in as well.

Fred, have you checked for vacuum leaks at the base gasket?

7/10 a high idle after rebuilding a carb is found here. (at least, that's what I see on the forum)

(Edit to add) maybe there is a vacuum line you missed reconnecting? Like for the choke heater?
