  1. I believe it is designed to allow additional air to the air filter when the big engine demands it.
  2. Excellent suggestion David! I was appalled at the amount of build up in both my trucks. This time, I also removed the resister pack which opened a window to the evaporator coil, so I could actually see the "stuff" resting on the bottom. It is not necessary, but I am glad I did.
  3. Rembrant, I bet you would be surrounded by Fords in Skiatook in September!
  4. It's very simple logic, isn't it? There's no way for the truck to know what gear it's in prior to top gear, so the EEC has a preset RPM in which an output is fired. If the vacuum is high (throttle closer to being closed), then a switch closes and fires the indicator light. Time to shift. Interesting. I assume the transmission offered in the MPG packages was the four speed where 4th was OD? (I'm not very familiar with all of the Bullnose manuals, but I presume that it was not the trans with the granny low 1st gear? It wasn't an automatic, and it wasn't a 5spd. That doesn't leave much else. Has there been anybody show up on any of the forums with one of these trucks with the shift light still operational? I haven't seen it in my travels, but then again I wasn't looking for it either;). No operational upshift light, but I can tell you that the 1984 routinely returned 26+ mpg @ 60-65 mph [many times] prior to the wide spread introduction of gasohol.
  5. For you, Jonathan! http://www.thedetroitbureau.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Beverly-Hillbillies-with-Car.jpg
  6. Yes, but don't the onion rings taste good!
  7. Not today [last weekend], I had time to "play", so I did a few little things to my truck [i.e. adjust alternator v-belt, tighten valve cover bolts, check and replace a couple of rubber caps on intake manifold vacuum tree, etc.]. I want to encourage everyone to do this final item as we all know how and that it is important, but sometimes put this job off. I am talking about cleaning the duct work supplying air for the A/C, vent, heat, etc. A friend [AbandonedBronco] just experienced a fire in his Bronco, which spurred me to do this task. Even though I have not heard any leaves being chewed by the fan or smelled burning leaves, I did find enough tender to have caused burning. It is only about a one hour job, so GET TO IT!!!
  8. My son's 1984 [came with front air dam, manual transmission, 2.47 rear gears] has the upshift indicator, but no wiring going to it.
  9. I wonder if the one you found, Gary, might be one of the early "gas mileage" models? If so, it might also have the tiny air dam on the front bumper, the upshift indicator and 2.47 rear gears as well as 205 or 215/75X15 tires.
  10. For 49 state models, I believe the change was made in 1984 and went through 1986.
  11. When I was in college my folks bought a '78 Toyota Celica. In the owners manual it had a translation table with the British and American words for some car-related terms (they also included wrench = spanner). Those lists are always interesting, but even more-so when they're compiled by someone who's native language is Japanese! I don't recall the specifics anymore, but I remember there were some items in the list where I'd never have figured out the "American" term without the British one to point me in the right direction! I had a 1976 Subaru. One time while reading the owner's manual, I was amused to read that if the engine is shut off while at higher RPMs, a loud bang may be heard. [back fire?]
  12. There should be a vacuum reservoir under the hood, which maintains vacuum during full throttle runs. On 1984's and 1985's [six cylinders], the reservoir is a black plastic ball shaped item.
  13. Why not change [fill in] the top of the E.B. grill?
  14. 1985 & 1986? Decent shape and fair price w/shipping included. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1980-86-OEM-FORD-F-150-BRONCO-WOODGRAIN-FACTORY-FRONT-SPEEDO-DASH-TRIM-BEZEL/183234360304?hash=item2aa99e73f0:g:okoAAOSwuHFbAYBT

  16. Hmmm... Gary, I wonder how much of this "harsh ride" is due to the recently discussed extra leaves [leafs?] in Big Blue's rear springs?
