Part broken off...

fr0bert
Hi guys, finally getting around to doing some much needed work on the truck and in the process of putting my valve covers back on after putting on new gaskets and a respray this part pictured just dropped off

It seems to be a vent or exhaust from the engine block?? It's completely rusted out so I'm gonna need to replace it, I just can't seem to find what it's called!

It came off from this grey part circled here?

Thanks!

Rob.

Rob - The pic below is from our page on Documentation/Emissions/Thermactor Systems.  And I think the part you are talking about 9A487.

Do you need to meet emission testing?  If not, and I don't think you do since you are running the Edelbrock intake, you can remove the manifold that goes across the back of the engine and plug the holes in the head.  If I remember correctly the holes are tapped 5/8-11 and you can get really short bolts, like 1/2" long, in there to plug the holes.

Ahh... I see! So would this have originally connected to the smog pump? My truck hasn't had a cat or a smog pump since I got it, so luckily there's no emmision check required for antique plates in Virginia!

Thanks for the swift reply Gary!

Be glad it broke off above the check valve, or you would have a new (unmuffled) exhaust pipe under the hood!

AKA F4ZZ-6E086-A in my world. Should be able to get them at any Ford dealer or engine parts supplier. They're used to plug the thermactor holes at the front of the heads, and the back on engines that don't have it.

I've always been curious on this when I see people reference putting plugs in the head holes. Was it all of them except the 460 that were threaded?

This is the .666" cupped welch plug, or a short bolt?

I was hoping the 460 is threaded.

Nope.
They have a C shaped collar and a screw next to it.
I'm sure you could find a brass tapered pipe plug and just crank it in.

Jim's correct :(
When I get home I can post a picture of what I was going to use for an in-truck solution before I ended up pulling the motor.

I'm not sure on the 460, I think they're cup plugs - DOZZ-6026-B, I think.

The threaded ones are used on small blocks, which looks like what he has.

No, you were good - his is a 351 and Gary's diagram is applicable. It was my fault for hijacking it with the 460 question.

I was asking which p/n myrl was giving.
Then replied to Dane.

Dane, if you have the heads off or engine out you can get the plugs at NAPA.

Ok, that’s what I seem to remember, that you couldn’t do it without removing the heads or engine.

Yes
The 460 sits so close to the firewall there's no way you could get a punch and hammer back there.

But you now know it's just over 5/8 diameter.  (.666", the mark of The BEAST)
I *think* 3/8 NPT might work?
ETA: just checked 3/8 NPTM is .675" at the crests, so it should work.

Regarding the 460, here is the factory hold down clip:

It's offset due to the  retaining ring on the crossover tube.

Here is what I made before I pulled the 460 in the 86 and plugged it with the plug. Nothing groundbreaking but it works and isn't terrible to install all things considered. I installed some on my 85 1 ton and never had any leaking. On these I welded on washers to ensure the plate was over the hole and didn't twist when tightening down as I ran into that on the 85 and smeared the gasket maker.
