Headlight and wiper knob - how do you get them out?

Pete Whitstone
I am trying to remove the facia in front of the instrument cluster from my 81. I have it all detached but it will not come off because of the headlight and wiper knobs. Do the knobs come off the shaft, or does the whole shaft come out somehow? I know early Mustangs were like that. What's the secret?

Thanks!

There is a little piece of metal behind the knob, push that down and it releases the tension and the knob slides off the shaft.

The knobs come off by pressing a spring on them with a hook.  You'll see a notch and you can pull towards the rear with a hook and then pull the knob off.

But the headlight switch's knob and shaft can be pulled out by reaching up under the dash to the switch and pressing a spring-loaded pin then pulling the shaft and knob out.  But I can tell you that reaching up there isn't easy.

There should be a little cut out on the back side of the knob. I believe it corresponds with the flat side of the shaft.

Here is a video that may help.
