Re: Other Projects - Car and Non Car Related

Rembrant
Figured I'd move the Ford specific parts of my RV discussion over to this thread. For the Garagemahal, I'll consider this to be an E350 460 EFI E40D Dana project, and keep the RV portion out of it.

In any case, I did finally piece together an almost complete correct* air intake system for the 460 EFI, with some NOS parts from Texas and some ratty old parts removed from a junked cube van in Connecticut. In the end I paid way too much for all of this stuff, but I wanted to get everything back to a baseline with this thing. I also have to remove all of the propane conversion wiring, and I haven't even started that yet...ugh.

This is what the old now inop propane conversion looks like under the hood...

The new/old stock air intake assembly waiting to be installed:

It actually got busted up in shipping, but I was able to repair it and get it cleaned up:

Something I was missing was the correct tube/line for the crankcase breather. I went out to the junkyard on Sunday to wander around and I found a crankcase breather line still intact on a 1991 F350 w/460, so I snagged it, and removed the fitting from the airbox end. I'll just buy some 1/2" hose for this, but I needed this end to properly connect the crankcase breather/filter in the airbox.

Anyway, we're on the road to recover with this thing. I also picked up new gaskets for the throttle body, EGR, and IAC. Going to try and get a whole bunch of stuff done to this thing in one big swoop once I have all of the parts ready to roll.

Yes, it does look good.

And getting everything together to install is my way of doing it.

But don't worry about posting the RV part on the Garagemahal/Bullnose Bible.  It doesn't seem to car.

Gary,

For what it's worth, returning the entire intake system on this thing back to stock will probably do nothing other than lighten my wallet, but the psychological effect will be huge for my mild (sometimes severe) OCD...lol.

You can move these new comments back over to the RV thread if you wish Gary. I just figured I'd keep the non-Bullnose stuff out of general population...lol. While not Bullnose related, you guys have been very helpful on the 460/E4OD/Dana topics that I am an extreme rookie with;).

It is up to you, Cory.  Tell me where you want them moved and I'll do it.

We aren't picky.  Bill's got his LeBaron on here, I have the boat somewhere, and Ray's talking about a Crown Vic.  The thing that brought us together is Ford trucks, but that doesn't mean that's all we have in common.  So why not talk about them as well?

I agree with Gary there Cory. We all have one interest that brought us all together but that's not our only interest, which is another thing we all have in common. We have many interests that together makes us interesting. Bill also has a Chrysler LeBaron, Gary has a boat and his grand kids and I am also working at putting my Town Car back together and also my garden. When I get some more money I'll be getting a starter for the Town Car from DB Electrical and putting it back on the road. I will also have a tiller I will be repairing as well, with pictures.

Cory, what did you use to repair that part on the air intake that broke in shipping?
Little plastic glue, plastic weld or ?

On that JY breather part, that is the only place I know to get them.
I still need one for the 300 six but there is just enough of the filter poking thru that that your parts fits on that I was able to slip a hose on it.

Dave, it was kind of a tough spot to fix as it is directly under where the hose clamp needs to tighten the hose/duct on. I glued the two broken pieces in place just to hold them where they needed to be, then using some sheet metal I made a sleeve that fit snugly inside the plastic. With the sleeve in place, I then stuck some 1/8" rivets through the plastic to hold it firmly in place. It's not pretty, but you can't see it anyway....and it works...lol.

I was planning to stick a hose directly on the filter, but when I found the breather line, I jumped with joy to have that fitting...lol. PS: That is not what I went to the junkyard to find, so I was happy that I did find it.

Damn, Frank, a 1990 Town Car, we had one of those, last year for the 302 and first year for the new body and only year for the rear drum brakes on that body. Nice car, gave it to our daughter after my first wife passed away and her live in boyfriend trashed it for her.

OK Dana experts...

I have an appointment for an MVI on the RV tomorrow, and I'm curious about rear brakes on this thing in case it needs any work. The certification label says that it is a Dana rear diff with 4.10 gears, but that is all it says. The rear end tag is still intact, but I can't read the numbers on it where it is...I think the tag might be on backwards, not sure. The fuel tank hangs really low in this thing, and it is about 2" behind the rear end cover, so it's hard to get good pics, but I'm assuming this thing is a Dana 60 or 70? It is a 1993 E350 (31ft cutaway).

I guess what I really need to know is, would I need any special tools or anything to do any brake work on this rear end? Or is it just a bigger version of the regular rear drum brakes I'm already used to?

Second, Rockauto shows both 12x3 and 12.125 x 3.5" rear shoes for this thing. Is there any way to tell what it would take without disassembling and measuring?

I am guessing, based on some pictures I've found online, that this is a Dana 70?

Gary and I were just talking about taking a VIN rubbing with a crayon, when the wrong windshield is installed.
Might work for your tag too.

The BOM should be stamped in the axle housing.
If you can read that by sanding it down a bit you will know what went into the axle.

Likely a 70 given the GVWR.
Is there a door jamb tag?

Look on the hog head for number cast in.

I can get the info off the rear end once I can get under there and remove the tag. I just can't read it where it is as it looks like it was installed backwards or upside down.
