85 F350 Crewcab Longbed 2WD SRW running 460 with manual 4 speed

Edward Michael

Howdy Folks,
Saved this beauty from collecting another season of leaves.
Running great up to a couple weeks ago when is started stalling while driving uphill due to fuel loss.
Able to save it for awhile by clutching the transmission and pulsing the gas pedal, but, it just keeps
doing the same thing every time it's driving upwards.  Runs real well on flat ground.
Right now, the truck is waiting for a new Holley from Summit Racing, though, we don't think the carb is the
issue.

While it is sitting we would like any help with testing the in tank electric fuel pumps.  Front and rear.
The idea is to attach a 12 volt battery to the appropriate contact on the selector valve connection.
It is a 5 wire/contact connection.  We are not sure which wire goes to each tank pump, so, before we start touching 12 volts to each of the 5 contacts, we are asking.

Any knowledge which color the hot is for the front/rear tanks?
Any idea why the truck will lose fuel pressure going uphill?
Any testing procedure to correct or test these possibilities?

Thank you for any consideration.
Best Regards,

Edward

Edward - Welcome to the Bullnose Forum!  Where are you located?  I ask because you may be close to someone on here that could help in person.

You really should open a thread/new topic in the main section to do the troubleshooting as this is usually for greetings and info about yourself and your truck. However, why not do a bit of troubleshooting here.

The fuel selection valves changed over the years, so it is difficult to know for sure what one you have. And the 460’s had several different fuel schemes themselves. So the 1986 EVTM may not be a perfect match for what you have, but it is the best place to start, albeit with another caveat - up to and including 1985 Ford used hash marks and dots as well as stripes to indicate some wires, but in 1986 they just used stripes. So you may have hash marks or dots where the EVTM shows stripes, but the colors are the same.

The diagram you want is on Page 105 here: Electrical/EVTM/1986 EVTM/Electric Fuel Pump Control. And on Page 107 is an explanation of how it works. Further, if you need the schematic for the fuel tank switch, you’ll find one on Page 96. However, remember that the selector valves changed a lot over time, and that may not describe the one you have.

If these pages aren’t right for your truck then I can check out the ‘85 EVTM that I haven’t scanned and put on. Or maybe someone else has one for 1983?

Gary, he will need the 85 information, I believe the 85 has one more relay and I think that was supplying 12V to the tank selector valve. You might even want to set up a section just on the hot fuel handling package since there were 3 or 4 different circuits used over the years.

Bill - Good idea on the section on hot fuel handling. But, maybe it should have an expanded scope to be all 460 fuel systems. That way the user could ascertain what system they have.

Anyway, I guess I’d better have the ‘85 EVTM scanned and put it up. And are you shipping me the ‘96 one? I can have it scanned and ship it back with the powder coated parts.

I have to go put my hands on it first, then I will pack it, an EEC-V box and the shims/washers I have here.

This post was updated on .
Edward - If you create a thread/topic in the main part of the forum I'll move these posts there.

Anyway, I had the 1985 EVTM scanned today and the 1984 EVTM will be scanned probably tomorrow, and I'll be placing them on the website soon.  But, for now here's the appropriate page.

And here is the page from the 1984 EVTM.  Looks like the 1984 and 1985 EVTM's show the same circuits.

We can delete it if you want. Or I can delete posts within the thread. But better yet, I can move threads. How about I move this to the General section and you start an intro thread?
