Yes, David is right.  It will fit the carb.  The question is will it hit the A/C compressor.  I don't think so, but it is hard to tell.

However, Rick has one, or at least a similar one on his truck, so maybe he knows?

Here's a pic below of Rick's engine bay....or is it Lucille's engine bay?. I have two of these air cleaners now myself and just got new correct (finally!!) decals for them recently.

That Ebay ad is incorrect.

That air cleaner was only available on the 1982 Ford Mustang GT.  It was made specifically to fit the Motorcraft 2150 2-barrel carburetor the Mustang GT had that year.  You can tell by the smaller base and higher dome.  Notice the sticker reads "5.0 Liter H.O." It will *not* fit a 4-barrel carburetor without modification.

The 1983 - 1985 dual-snorkel air cleaners had a larger base and flatter dome to fit the Motorcraft/Holley 4180 4-barrel carburetor that the Mustang GT used for those years.  The sticker on it will read "5.0 Liter 4V H.O."

Lucille has a 1984 - 1984 Mustang GT air cleaner and it fits over my Ford/Autolite 4100 4V carburetor perfectly. As you can tell from my pictures, the driver's side snorkel is offset from the center by design, which allows it to clear the A/C compressor.  I didn't have to make any modifications at all to this air cleaner.  The only thing you will have to do is put the PCV valve in the driver's side valve cover and the breather in the passenger's side valve cover - just like the Mustangs had it.

It was if Ford designed it for these trucks as well as the Mustangs.

How is the drivers side flex hose connected to the core support? Is there a left handed version? I played around with a spare one that I have but it's angled the wrong way to sneak around the radiator on that side.

Turn it upside down.  Worked perfectly on Big Blue, and looks like it would on Dad's truck.

It's been awhile and I thought I tried that but it does seems like the solution. I'll give it another shot once it warms up and my spare hose isn't so brittle.

Yes.

You can clearly see the difference in size looking at that one when comparing it to the one in your first post.

I named her "Lucille" because she is a natural red-head:  Canyon Red interior and Dark Canyon Red exterior.

The most famous red-head female I know of is Lucille Ball.

What do you mean by "new correct" decals?  Did you finally find some 1983/1984 style decals that fit?

I did, yes! It took me a while, but like you, I purchased several decals from different vendors, and none of them fit properly. I finally found out that regardless of what Mustang parts vendor you might buy the decal(s) from, they were all being produced by the same company (Osborne Reproductions in GA). I called them up, and the owner was super helpful. He actually went and got and old 83-85 air cleaner lid from a friend of his, and test fitted the decals himself...and in turn made new ones to fit the covers properly. It took a couple months back and forth...Christmas holidays were a big delay, but he sent me two new correct decals. I have not installed them yet, but I've laid them in place and they visibly fit MUCH better. Osborne actually installed one on an 85 cover and sent me a picture of it, so they should be good now.

I'm just waiting to re-finish the covers I have before sticking the new decals on. I have two stock covers, and one SVO cover, and I'm having a couple of them refinished next week.

I'll post up some pics when the new decals are installed. Stay tuned.

Rembrant, Did you ever install the new air cleaner decals?

I would like to know if they were actually improved.  If they fit well, I think I might like to replace the 1984/1985 style I currently have on Lucille.

Rick,

Yes sir I sure did and they fit great. If you are going to order them order directly from Osborne and even better speak to the owner (David, I think?) and explain the situation. I’d be worried that there are still some of the incorrect fitting ones still in circulation with the resellers.

I took your advice and called Osborn Reproductions and ordered two of the 1983 style air cleaner decals.  You are right - these fit much better than the other ones I tried.

Thanks for the tip, Chief!

Excellent! I talked to the guy (David?) a year or two ago whenever I got these decals and was explaining to him that all of the ones we were buying didn't fit. I don't think believed me at first, but he borrowed a couple air cleaner lids from a friend and discovered what we had previously...that the decals were indeed incorrect. He sent me two new ones, and they fit great.

Gary, is there a real performance benefit about a twin snorkel, or is it just a cool looking gadget?

Re: Twin snorkle air cleaner - reasonably priced

For a 460 I think there is a performance benefit as Ford put a second opening on the 460's air cleaner that opened under low vacuum, so they must have realized the single snorkle is restrictive.  But that 2nd opening is at the hottest part of the engine compartment, right back by the firewall, so the engine ingests hot air when it opens.  However if you use a dual-snorkle air cleaner and plumb both to "cold" air ahead of the radiator support there'd have to be a benefit.

Smaller engines might not have the same amount of benefit as a 460 since they won't pull as much air.  But there would have to be some benefit, although less and less as you go down on engine size.

But, they look cool!
