Yesterday while waiting on the powder to bake in the oven I scanned in several TSB's. Then last night during the football game I added several of them to the website. But, in doing so I discovered that some of the work I'd previously done hadn't stayed "done", or I'd done it incorrectly. So I spent half of the time fixing what was wrong - and even then there may still be some glitches, so please let me know what you see that doesn't work or doesn't look right.
And, in case we are shopping for TSB bulletins, meaning the stapled booklet that the individual TSB's came in roughly every other week, I created a page to track what Steve83 and I have: TSB's/TSB Bulletin List. David/1986F150Six is really good at finding things on eBay and elsewhere, so I've asked him to be on the lookout for good deals on bulletins we don't have, and I thought this page would help him know what we need. Anyway, along the way I got lost with what I added. But here's what I think I got added. And the part after the ":" is the text that people will see when these pages show up in a search, so please let me know if they are descriptive enough to entice them to click. 81-06-13 BUMPER GUARD & TIRE CARRIER: Instructions for dealer installation of bumper guards and swing-away spare tire carrier on 1981 Broncos.
83-3-15 PICKUP BOX ALIGNMENT: Ford's instructions for aligning the box to the cab on Styleside trucks.81-06-15 PICKUP BOX WOOD FLOOR REPLACEMENT: Ford's TSB explains how to properly replace the wood floor of the Flareside beds.83-16-17 PICKUP BOX LEAN: Instructions to eliminate pickup box, or bed, lean.83-24-18 SWING-LOCK MIRROR MOVES: TSB to replace swing lock mirrors that do not hold their "adjusted" or "set" position.83-24-19 MIRROR HEAD VIBRATION: TSB to replace 6" x 9" Western Swing Away mirrors with 5" x 8" mirrors to reduce vibration.81-06-04 INTEGRAL POWER STEERING GEAR: Ford's instructions on repair of the integral power steering gear on 1980 & '81 Bullnose trucks.
81-06-16 FRONT WHEEL GREASE SEAL GASKETS: Ford's instructions for installing a new wheel grease seal kit to prevent road splash from contaminating the front wheel seals on 1980 & '81 Bullnose 4x2 trucks.81-06-17 REAR PARKING BRAKE CABLES: TSB to replace the rear parking brake cables on 1980 & '81 F-Series and Broncos.83-25-21 AIR CLEANER SEALING: Instructions for sealing the air cleaner on 1982-'83 Bullnose trucks operated in dusty or off-road conditions.
81-06-18 CLUTCH HOUSING FILLS W/MUD/DIRT: TSB for installation of a shield to prevent entry of mud or dirt into the bell housing on 1980 & '81 F-Series and Broncos83-23-17 8.8" REAR AXLE VENT: Instructions for relocation of the vent on 8.8" rear axles to prevent lubricant leakage.

And, here's the results of a morning-after search for the phrase that is included on the bumper guard and tire carrier TSB, which is "Instructions for dealer installation of bumper guards and swing-away spare tire carrier on 1981 Broncos."
But, note that I did not put quotes around that sentence in the search. I tried it with the quotes and our page comes up #1. In fact, it is the only one. But, no one would be searching for exactly that sentence, so that's not valid. But, it isn't likely that someone is going to search for the sentence I put in. So, what about just searching for the TSB #?

Oops! I forgot. I was supposed to merge those two pages.
Thanks for reminding me. Maybe I can fix it, and add some more, tomorrow.

Ok, I'm confused. (But what else is new?) I was remembering when you said something about having scanned things w/o merging two pages into a single document. But I went back and looked at what you said and that was about calibration information, not TSB's. Right? So, did you previously tell me that the e-brake TSB was to refer to 98-5A-35? If so, I've missed that somehow. Also, do you have 98-5A-35 in a pdf so I can add it? If so I'll put some verbiage at the top of the 81-6-17 page to refer the reader to it.

I just meant that, because they're related, your PDF page should have some way of letting the reader know that there's another TSB about e-brake cables. You can add a link to my SMN page (like that thumbnail), or get a PDF of that later TSB from somewhere else (like BBBInd), but I only have it as BMP & JPG plus the text in that caption.
BTW I just noticed I misnamed the welding TSB - it's actually 83-13-04, but my filename is 83-13-03. |

I agree that the page needs to reference a later one, like that one. If you have it in bmp or jpg I can create the pdf. Easy peasy, and if it is good/crisp enough I can OCR it.
Can I pick up your text and add it to the page? On the file name, that's no problem. Now that you've pointed it out I've renamed it.

In general, I'd prefer you link to my pages rather than copy them (particularly any of my original text or images). I link people here, rather than copying your content. For things that are strictly from other publications (like official TSBs), it doesn't matter where you get the text or image since it's all identical. But I assume it will be easier & quicker for you to just get the PDFs from BBBInd. |

I'm trying to make this site self-contained because I've seen so many photos become no longer available recently. So if this site is available then all of the docs and pics will be.
However, in your case that's probably not going to be an issue. But I'll see if I can get a good copy of that TSB. Otherwise I'll link to yours. Thanks.

Steve - I've linked the e-brake TSB to your page. I re-read the BBB user agreement and don't feel good downloading things from their site and then posting it on ours.

Today I added these TSB's, and I think I'm now caught up with what you sent, Steve. But, I'm getting ready to take about a week off, so if you want to hold off on sending more that's fine. Or, if you do I'll put them in the Unprocessed folder.
And we now have 51 TSB's in our quiver. It appears you've decided NOT to stick with 2 digits per group in the TSB numbers. Back when I started collecting them, Windows (maybe Win2K) sorted file names by simple numeric/alphabetic order. So when I went looking for TSBs on my HDD, it would put (for example) 83-3-15 after 83-30-5 (because 8331# comes after 8330#). To keep them ordered, I changed them to 83-03-15 and 83-30-05. But now, most OSs sort more intuitively (more humanly), so it may not be as important.
But I think you should still pick your standard & keep it. The ones listed in your first post on this page ARE 2-digit groups; the ones right above this post aren't. |

Yes, I decided to enter them the way Ford did it on the TSB's themselves as well as the indices. The issue came up when I tried to find one of the TSB's I'd just entered. The search function won't find the TSB unless you put it in exactly the way Ford did. And, since most people will probably enter it the way Ford used it, I changed.

Also, I should note that Darin/Oz Econoline purchased a number of Ford pub's and had them shipped to me for scanning. I got to looking yesterday and discovered that 3 TSB booklets were included: 80-20; 21; and 22. So I've added them to the TSB bulletin list and will scan them sometime soon.
In addition, and not really w/in the subject matter, but I thought I'd pass on what some of the other are: Three booklets I've not seen before: Light Truck Roadability Diagnosis Guide; 1980 Truck Service Highlights - Electrical; and 1980 Truck Service Highlights - Chassis. And another book I've not seen - 1980 Emission Systems Schematics and Diagnostic Specifications. This one is interesting because it has very detailed info on every calibration code used by Ford in 1980.

Thanks, Steve. I've downloaded and saved all of those files in my Unprocessed folder. And between us we have 39 TSB's in there that haven't been put up on the website. But, since that is a slow and tedious process I'm saving doing that until I have some in-the-arm-chair time, like Super Bowl Sunday.
Also, I've just been contacted by an individual that has these TSBs that he wants to donate: 9/74-1/78, 1978-1979, 1980-1981, 1982-1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990,1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, and a couple of index books. They are in 23 binders and he estimates that collectively they weigh ~275 lbs. Shipping was going to be expensive, but he has a friend that is going to be driving through Oklahoma in about 10 days and he thinks he will bring them. So, if this comes about we should have ALL of the TSBs we'd ever need. And I'll have my work cut out for me to scan all of them and get them on the website. The enormity of this project is overwhelming. When we started the website had about 500 pages. We now have over 550 as each TSB takes a page. So, if there are 1000 TSBs then we'll have 1500 pages to the site when this project is done - without adding other pages. But, I think there's a hidden problem - the menu system won't support having that many things nested under each of the headings. For instance, assuming an even distribution, each of Ford's 9 categories (Body/Windnoise/Leaks/Trim, etc) will have over 100 TSBs nested under it. I'm wondering if we need to change the indexing to have TSBs nested by year and by date/bulletin. Thoughts?

On second thought, the idea of going to a by-year instead of a by-category scheme isn't much help as there aren't that many more years involved than categories. If we assume that the bulk of the TSB's will have been issued during 1980 - 89 , then there would only be 10 years to spread the ~1,000 TSB's across instead of the 9 categories, and that's not much help.
However, perhaps if we use the bulletin dates as a second layer it would help, although we'll still have ~25 bulletins nested under each year, and there's really no rhyme nor reason as to why a TSB is in a given bulletin, so that doesn't help anyone find them. In fact, it actually makes it worse. So I'm still at a loss as to how to categorize 1,000 TSB's. Any help would be appreciated.

Again - I know nothing about building websites...
But I'd imagine just storing each TSB on its own page somewhere. Then have a page with a search menu (similar to BBB's) above a long list of TSB links in numerical order with titles & descriptions. So someone could use the search to find TSBs with keywords of interest, or use the menu to bring up a smaller group of applicable TSBs (using categories that you set up), or just scroll down the page to see all ~1,000 links. |
Administrator

I have the ability to hide a page from the menu. So that would constitute "just storing each TSB on its own page somewhere". In other words, the TSB's would be on the website but not accessible via the menu. Is that what you meant?
And we sorta have the "page with a search menu (similar to BBB's) above a long list of TSB links in numerical order with titles & descriptions" in the form of the index spreadsheet. However, it doesn't have the TSB's in numerical order. Instead it has them in alpha order within each of Ford's 9 categories. And, we have the search function. In the example below, which is the first 26 entries in the index spreadsheet, I've hit Control-F and brought up the search function within the browser - just like the instructions at the top of the page say. And I've typed in the word "improperly" and the computer says there are 2 instances of that word in the index, and it has highlighted the first instance in orange. Plus, you can cycle to them with the up/down arrows. (And if you type in "transmission" it'll currently find 136 instances of that, although as we add TSB's that aren't yet in the index that count will go up.) So here's what I propose: We hide all TSB pages but the index spreadsheet from the menu. So when you hit TSB's in the menu you'll find the index and can search for what you need, like a key word in the description or the TSB # if you know that. Does that work?
