Dumb Question for anyone that knows:  Where does this go and what's its function?

It looks similar to a broken spring I noted underside proximate to the bell housing driver's side when I first brought the truck home a few years back.  I can't find it on an exploded parts diagram for my (non-OD) NP435.

It is called SPRING (TRANSMISSION GEARSHIFT LEVER SPRING).  But I can't find it in the illustration section of the MPC either.  Don't know what to say.
