Re: Power Steering Return Rubber Hose Size?

Hi Gary,

I've sprayed the hose contact points with parts cleaner and also where the hoses join into the pump but by the time I get to look at it, it's already leaking and hard to tell where it's coming from. Mind you, I'm having to turn the wheel a few times, then run out and look under the hood, as I'm doing it all by myself.

I might just spring for the Saginaw unit and new hoses and hopefully, be done with it.

Question - will this unit work and the hoses in the order fit with our standard steering box?

If so, can anyone advise what size belt I'll also need, please?

I've tied shop towels or paper towels around things that appear to leak.  Keep them slightly apart and you can usually tell from whence the leak comes.

But, I don't know if that pump kit will work.  The pump itself should as the engine is essentially he same.  But, I don't know if the hoses will work.  Maybe someone else does?

As for a belt, I don't know that we can tell because we don't know the source of the bracket, and I would think that would determine the necessary belt length.

But, why not get a the necessary pieces from an E-Series van?

I have no doubt that the Borgeson products are top notch, but wow. That’s pricey and I would argue unnecessarily so. As Gary said, van parts are fairly readily available. The Saginaw pressure line is different, but not expensive.

Yes, I agree.

I think I'm going to do what Gary recommended and wrap each hose-outlet in a paper towel to determine exactly where the leak is.

If it's coming from the "spout" on the return line due to the hose not being correctly re-installed after a mechanic pulled my engine for head work (which I have a suspicion it is), I'll order some 3/8" fuel hose and double clamp it on the existing steel line.

If it's leaking from the actual reservoir due to a crack, then I'll look at the Saginaw exchange unit - either from Borgeson or possibly from other vendors. It just seemed that despite the cost, the Borgeson(?) unit had all the stuff I need for a more-simple installation - the bracket, the pulley, the hoses and so on... all of which is about 30 years old on my truck...

Good plan but for the fuel hose.  They make an oil hose rated for hot oil, and that's what I'd use.
