Front leaf spring - plastic insert that says "discard"

Anyone have any info on this? I was working on the brake calipers and see that it says discard on it. Looks like it provides isolation between the 2 leafs??

Also keeps my front tires from rubbing the leafs directly.

Not sure why you should discard it.

Those were used in production. They were meant to keep tie down chains from scratching the leaf springs, and were supposed to have been removed at PDI. It's amazing how many trucks we see that still have them.

But, it serves a useful purpose if you have big tires, so why throw them away?

My tires are stock 235/85R-16 and they still rub....

So....since its been in there for 35 years...is there any good reason to remove it now?

I don't see any reason to remove it. It obviously isn't going to fall off and it isn't hurting anything.
