It's very simple logic, isn't it?

There's no way for the truck to know what gear it's in prior to top gear, so the EEC has a preset RPM in which an output is fired. If the vacuum is high (throttle closer to being closed), then a switch closes and fires the indicator light. Time to shift. Interesting.

I assume the transmission offered in the MPG packages was the four speed where 4th was OD? (I'm not very familiar with all of the Bullnose manuals, but I presume that it was not the trans with the granny low 1st gear? It wasn't an automatic, and it wasn't a 5spd. That doesn't leave much else.

Has there been anybody show up on any of the forums with one of these trucks with the shift light still operational? I haven't seen it in my travels, but then again I wasn't looking for it either;).

No operational upshift light, but I can tell you that the 1984 routinely returned 26+ mpg @ 60-65 mph [many times] prior to the wide spread introduction of gasohol.
