That is definitely a medium duty F-600/900 instrument cluster circa 1992-1999, due to the electronic speedometer head.

Everything should work with our pickups except for the speedometer.
Truck: 1981 F-150 Explorer / Engine: 300-6 California MCU Feedback System / Trans: T-18 - 4 speed / 2.75 Ford Rear Axle Open Diff.

Can anyone tell from the back view if the cluster came out of a diesel as claimed in the ad or could it be from a gas F 600/900?

It's from a gas powered medium duty truck. Circa 1992/1999  F-600/900. You can tell that from the speedometer head being electric.

The diesel tach had the words diesel fuel only written on them during this time frame. 1992/1999.

The Gasoline tachs came in 40 x100, 45 x100, and for our pickups 60 x100.

The Diesels were 45 x100  with a redline at 35x100 for our pickups..

Thanks, that was my suspicion. I have a question into the seller to please verify whether gas or diesel. Says he’ll check when back in town.
If it turns out to be gas, it’s gonna be mine. 😏

On the back of the tachometer where the 4 terminals are, the Diesel will have a + or - for the signal, where the gas will be battery and signal [coil].

A 4500 RPM tach with E0TF-17B316-B is a gas tach, but may be either open or enclosed

This is what the back of my yellow/red 4500 diesel tach looks like. And it  has the # E5TF-17B316-A on its face.
Hoping I can get a pic of the back of the tach in the listing from the seller sometime this weekend.

I realize I was lucky, finding a complete cluster w/tripometer and tach.
Paid it around 30$ USD at my local yard, 5 years ago.

Found this locally, it is missing the post that is grounded if installing for an 8 cyl, but I’d be using for a 6 cyl. Think it would work? Or should I pass? Is there any way to field test without installing on a running engine?

A bit concerned that the tach is sitting at 1300 R's with no input.  So it may be stuck or way out of calibration.  If the latter you can pull the needle off and put it back on at 0.

But you can test by installing three jumpers:

Power: The lower right connector is B+ and that goes to 12v

Ground: The upper right connector is ground

Ignition: The upper left connector is for the signal in and it goes to the low side of the coil, which is labeled Tach and will be  DG/Y wire.

Thanks Gary. It didn’t even register with me that the needle is sitting @ 1300.
To be clear, I’d still need to have a running engine to connect the jumpers to, or is there a way to simulate the DG/Y tach signal?

Yes, the engine has to be running.  But there is a chance you could simulate a running engine by connecting the signal wire to positive/disconnecting/connecting RAPIDLY.  That will only provide 12v instead of the much higher voltage that the coil creates, something like 50v if I remember correctly, but it might work.

It might only make the tach needle jump though instead of read anything.

Ha! At my age there are very few things that I can do RAPIDLY!
Good to know for future reference, however I’m going to pass on this one. Too many ifs and buts, and you know what they say about candy and nuts!
The counter man says that he’s pretty sure he has a couple more trucks he can look at, it just might be a few days before he can shoot me some more pictures.
