Hey, where you been?

Yes, that's what it says.  But, I'll bet it is a mistake.

Hi Gary,

I know I am far less active as of late but I’m still in the background trying to follow along during coffee time and lunch breaks etc.,

And yes, I think the MPC is in error this time 😉. I wonder also about it being only 80/81 as I thought the SROD was used up to ‘83? I know I’ve seen it in a 1982 F150.

Jonathan - I was just pleased to hear/see from you.  I know you have your plate full.

But, I'll confess that I don't know all of the differences between the transmissons.  So when the MPC "4 O/D" and "Clark trans" I don't know which one(s) that is.  Was there only one 4-speed overdrive then?  Wasn't there the SROD and the top-loader?  I'm asking, I don't know.

There were three different 4-OD transmissions used for Bullnose.

T170F (SMOD) 1978-1984 Side Mounted Overdrive... cast iron case, shift rails mounted on the driver side of the case (externally). The 300 and 302 got a wider gear set, and 351W version had slightly taller 1st and 2nd gears.

T170FS (SROD) 1980-1983 Single Rail Overdrive... aluminum case, push down reverse, 300 and 302 applications only, considered the weakest and known for sloppy shifting.

T170FT (TOD) 1984-1987 Top shift Overdrive... aluminum case taller 1st and 2nd (same as 351W version of SMOD).

All are “top loaded” transmissions in the sense that the gears and shafts load in through the top of the case but only the TOD has a shift lever directly moving forks through the top cover.

That is very helpful, Jonathan.  Do you mind if I use that info on a page in the documentation section?  Easier to find it than in a thread.

Of course Gary, I will add the disclaimer that the information is regurgitated Internet information (mostly from the F150 Hub’s page) and is not Ford literature as you typically like for documentation. The F150 Hub makes no mention of the .71 overdrive ratio, yet it is in the dealer facts book... so there is one error/omission already... but the 4sp OD information is somewhat hard to find compared to the Borg Warner and New Process transmissions.

I thought maybe we could have a new page on those transmissions and include a bit of documentation.

Fantastic!!!

I see that it does not include SMOD, but that should definitely provide answers for the SROD and TOD 👍
