Larry the Lariat - My 86 F150 4x4

Thanks again guys!

I'm about to pull the trigger on a RAYBESTOS MC39634 from Rock Auto:

https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=309797&cc=1122398&pt=1836&jsn=2507

I specced a 1996 F150 and that was the number that came up, same as from the thread Gary posted.

Also was going to order oil for the 9" rear. Figured I'd also change fluid in the front diff at the same time. Rockauto has Motorcraft 80W-90 (same warehouse, so one shipping charge!), which is what I used in my 70 F100, so I was going to go with that. Does that seem like the right choice? From what I'm seeing, I'd need about 3Q for the rear and 1.5Q for the front. Does that seem about right? I figured I'd order 6Q to be sure I have enough.

Any other "while I'm there" items you'd suggest? I've got a three day weekend with nice weather (my driveway is my shop!), so I plan to tackle this soon. Looks like Rock Auto can have it all here Friday if I order soon. :)

That looks good. The listing doesn’t show the residual pressure valve, which you need, but Larry said it came with his.

And the lube looks good. But you will need a suction gun to pull the old lube out.

Haven't looked at the RockAuto price but let's not forget there's one languishing on eBay the U-Haul parts store does they have it listed as a 97 instead of an 87

on a 4wd the rear can be a trac loc "posi" that may require you to use a friction modifier also. look at the tag and decode the numbers there or look in th door jamb for the axle code and check in documents.

Good point!

Axle code 16, looks like 3.50 non-locking.

$41.79. More importantly, it should get here Friday so i can install this weekend. And supposedly has a lifetime warranty, though I’m not sure how that’s handled.

I think U-haul wants ~$55

Their shipping is OTD that day.

I've NEVER had a problem with them.

A friend had one of the residual pressure valves in his stock, so I’m covered if the one I ordered doesn’t have it. I’ve read conflicting info as to whether it’s ok to run this valve plus the factory proportioning valve (or combo valve it whatever we want to call it), with some saying to gut the residual pressure valve in that situation so it’s just an adapter.

Also, I’ve read that it may be necessary to adjust the pushrod, but i haven’t seemed to find what adjustment is needed for that. I did find this:

I’m guessing though that’s what we need for the factory master cylinder, but not what we need when running a newer master cylinder. Does it just need to be adjusted to whatever was the spec for 87-96?

Multifunction valve.....

At least, that's what Ford calls it. 🤷‍♂️

You can just get a fitting that adapts it, much like the fitting you need to put a normal brake line onto the rear axle splitter on the driver side. 💡

It's metric!

I've always gone for an inch of stick out.

Never had any idea there was an official dimension. :nabble_smiley_teeth:

I'm running the multifunction valve in addition to a residual pressure valve and have no problems.

On the push rod, the adjustment is sort of critical as too little and you'll have a bit of slack in the pedal, but too much and the brakes drag, which means they get hot and expand and drag more, which means...

Welder Scott and I adjusted his to get the slack out. That night his son drove the truck a few miles and all of a sudden the brakes locked up. They'd been smelling something for a minute or two and pulled into a parking lot just before they locked. And they weren't going anywhere until they cooled down. :nabble_smiley_sad:
