ArdWrknTrk
Mine is a 460 so it's good to know it can be squeezed on. Do you drain coolant to do it, or does it only lose a little? The bypass is pretty high. I would probably drain a gallon if it hadn't already ruptured and spewed at least that much throughout the engine bay. Not sure if I confused you with another member. I'm sorry, and will try to remember to scroll down to look at sigs when replying.
CRittaler
Well I spent a couple hours on my lunch break pulling the steering box. All in all that wasn't that bad of a job. I had a look at the frame and I don't see any cracks. I plan on having a closer look with the brightest light I can manage once I finish cleaning it up. I also pulled the steering shaft to replace the lower rag joint. Turns out the Lares 204 replacement that I bought is waaay too large and I needed the 206. But I also don't really want to go through the hassle of grinding off the rivets to replace it so I'm going to stop by the wrecking yard on Thursday/Friday and look for a steering shaft from an 87-91 and see if they have any that are in decent shape. alright, well I was able to return the Lares 204 part and exchange it for a Dorman 31008 which is for a 1987 F250. It looks very similar in shape to what is on my 85, with the exception of the pinch bolt being 180 degrees out from what I have now in order for the keys to be in the same position. It also looks like the pinch bolt doesn't slip into the groove on the input shaft of the steering box. I'm going to grind off the rivets on mine and use this since it's close enough for me. Here's some pictures of the new rag joint. I'll post more once I have it installed on the steering shaft.

Going to try and get the box back in the truck tonight. I have tomorrow and Friday off so I can work on it all weekend if needed as well.

CRittaler
That's what came with the Dorman kit! I'll snap some pictures tomorrow, but I got the new box installed and all the lines hooked up. Tomorrow I'm going to fill and purge the air out of the system and check for leaks. By far the worst part of this install was getting the power steering lines to thread into the new box.

Yes, the lines have to be in exactly the right spot or the fittings won't thread in, and you sure don't want to cross-thread them. Anyway, congrat's! Here's the pictures of the new box. I also tracked down the whistling noise I was hearing. Turns out the hose the PO used for the pcv valve was collapsing on itself. I was also able to tighten the clamps on the bypass hose and at first glance it looks like the leak stopped. I'll know better once I drive it again.
