Big ol' hole under my ZF5

Recommended Posts

I'm assembling my new powertrain. Got the ZF5 bolted up to the C8VE 460 block. Using a stock size 180 tooth flywheel and a 12" Centerforce clutch (stock size for the ZF5 and 460 in a 96-97 F truck).

So now I have the big hole under the flywheel. I have a new engine plate so it doesn't have the curved part at the bottom that covers the hole.

I can get the "inspection plate" that goes under the ZF5 in a 7.3. Will that fit using a 460 with a flat engine plate? If not, can it be modified to fit?

What it sounds like you need is the cover for the automatic transmission torque converter nuts access.

The bellhousing pattern is different between the 460 and the 6.9/7.3, so the holes aren't gonna line up. But it's close enough that you might be able to make it work. The shape should be the same.

I think the bigger problem is that the diesel starter locating pilot is different than the one in the 460 cover plate?

I believe I'm using the one from my T-19 on the Zf, but I did have to oval the two lower holes to get the little bolts through the 'chin'

Edit:

1990 7.3 takes a ring gear 15.681" dia w/ 155 teeth.

460 is 15.512" OD and 180 teeth according to ATP.

I'm not sure what this does to starter spacing....
