Fixing Eddie

Duh! :nabble_smiley_blush:

Hi all.

Jim. As I read the diagram, the distributor is connected directly to ported vacuum. With nothing in between. So far I have not seen two identical emission charts.IMG_20210101_155102_1.jpg.55bb6ee7d67a523b79f02834e9f9bc82.jpg Do you think the converter is the original ? Since I am waiting for new screws and other stuff, I think I will have to decide for a new carburetor. Gary. Thanks for info about intake. The weather has also finally turned for better temperatures. Got to get Eddie ready for the road.

Hi. The transmission is down on the floor and I am waiting for parts. So why not tear the carpet out :nabble_smiley_grin: The carpet needs a cleansing.Luckily there was not much wrong there, mostly more dead bugs.IMG_20210514_165808_4.jpg.9388f6c78c5f69ca9b8d345ed4d75f60.jpgIMG_20210514_164336_8.jpg.bfaceed82340d40ec0644d037791052d.jpgFound a document with specs from the factory under the carpet. Smelled like old oily paper back from -86.IMG_20210514_172956_6.jpg.6d0b91c9e525bf2a3fb262402732c072.jpgIts preserved now behind 2 layers of plastic. The little rust I found I tried to polish away. I hope you get him running again, easily and quickly.

The sheet you found is a build sheet, and what little I know about this is on the page at Documentation/Specifications/Build Sheet Interpretation.

Hi.Today I got new screws and parts to get the transmission back on again. The week before has been spent doing other chores. Cleaning carpet, fixing some rust. Putting carpet and chairs back in.IMG_20210517_160016_4__Kopi.thumb.jpg.c959db36cfc6489bb02c5d9dc4e5c52f.jpgIMG_20210524_130522_0.jpg.24d0b4e3c7825f7bd0b36d6798a21bd7.jpgOld plastic, fragile zippersIMG_20210524_160942_0.thumb.jpg.93819ca289ee08d2cf5141a586990657.jpgIMG_20210524_181500_8.thumb.jpg.5b04c35c8d004d429ca903daa09348e1.jpg Pulled the carpet at the rear. Unforunately there were more rust there.:nabble_smiley_unhappy:IMG_20210524_203122_1.jpg.91ffe6e2f452c13780d5ce65a6086144.jpgIMG_20210524_200514_7.jpg.7a075295ba69ca5843127121a09417d0.jpg This evening I got the transmission back on. So during the week I hope to get it all together. New seal. The transmission is 1/4 " to much to the right for the holes in the transmission mount. I can press it to the left to get the screws in. Do you think it helps to loosen the bolts that holds the engine in its mounts for sentering the transmission ? And then tighten them again.IMG_20210525_213149_0.thumb.jpg.64db7175b9189b253a16dce2ae8f59f4.jpg Ok. Thanks for now.

Yes, it might help to loosen the bolts holding the engine's mounts to the perches on the frame. But 1/4" isn't much to move it as the rubber mounts will accommodate that.

Otherwise, you are making really good progress. But that is UGLY water left over from cleaning that carpet! :nabble_smiley_scared:

That's not much rust, but what are you treating it with?

Hi. Ok. I try to loosen the engine mounts a little. You are right about the dirty water. Cleaned the carpet at the back this evening. They are collecting a lot of dirt through more than 30 years. When I see what other members are working on when it comes to rust, Eddie is in very good condition. It is incredible and impressive what they can repair. But first I will focus on getting Eddie running. Then I may try to cut or grind away the rust. Or most of it. And see how big the hole/ holes will be... And how to fix it. Maybe treat it with Brunox ? Right now we are having temp. around 20`C / 70F. Thats hot for us:nabble_smiley_happy:

I think that shampoo system is working pretty well for you. :nabble_anim_claps:

As for treating the rust, I'm not very aware of the options. Haven't heard about Brunox before. Maybe Jim has a suggestion?

Brunox seems to be a company. I would assume we are looking at the rust converter/epoxy primer product?

The rust doesn't seem very bad from my phone.

It couldn't hurt to wire brush any loose flakes and surface rust off before applying an epoxy primer.

You are doing a great job, Stein!

Hi again. Tried loosen the bolts that held the engine in the mounts. When I fastened the left one first, the transmission moved a little to the left. Brunox is said to stopp rust and also act as a primer. It will color clean steel blue , as Gun Blue. Today I got everything back on under Eddie. Had to reuse the gasket between transfer case and transmission. Aplyed a thin layer of silicon sealer on both sides of the gasket. Same on the new gasket for the oil pan on the transmission. New filter, gasket and 10,5 l ( 11 quarts ) atf oil for the transmission. Started up the engine and shifted through all gears to get the oil through the system. After awhile there came a lot of smoke from burning off spilled transmissin oil on the exhaust pipes under the engine. My neighbour was a little worried :nabble_smiley_oh: After 20 minutes I turned off the engine, and belive it or not, there were no leaks:nabble_smiley_happy: The next will be trying to mount a new carburetor, a Holley Demon.. Bought a kit with new intake. But for now I will try to make the Demon work with my original intake.IMG_20210525_234715_5.jpg.32de7674748da83e9b0f582580959775.jpg Summer is here, and Eddie has been parked to long IMG_20210530_200436_8.thumb.jpg.40efe248a260397679db65e6312392dc.jpg

Hi.

Will the Demon fit ? First removing the original carburetor.IMG_20210531_172625_2.thumb.jpg.06861c021de0e8fc72c896fb847146f9.jpg The evaporator system from the carburetor must go. The evaporator system for the tank with canister I will try to keep. The EGR plate is kept.Needed to mount the Demon. Dont know if its possible to make the EGR work.IMG_20210531_174017_5.jpg.ce10471c45c539d3c5ddb94cd99e089f.jpg Had to use the thick gasket for the original carburetor along also to get clearance for the vacuum port at the back of the Demon.IMG_20210531_182527_5.thumb.jpg.bdf0785d4b3c69e154e67ab0beaaa331.jpgIMG_20210531_182928_4.thumb.jpg.0762e143dd4c8b71a871704981cdd179.jpg Next I cut off the lower part of throttle connection on the carburetor and mangled the Heat Vacuum Control Valve since it collided with the operation of the throttle.IMG_20210531_185840_6.thumb.jpg.7357f7c6ad05f3a1a41a805a101d31b2.jpgIMG_20210531_201751_6.thumb.jpg.22657b3bde156ab23e007e072e811520.jpg The heat control valve is also gone. Then I could mount the Demon.IMG_20210531_214745_1.thumb.jpg.be833d68863b39a0a8a49201ca543218.jpg On the fourth try the engine started and ran nice at 750 rpm. Have not tried to drive Eddie yet. When I give him suddenly full throttle, he back fires and dies. When more softly no problem. Today I will check vacuum, the ported vacuum for the distributor and timing.
