New/Repro YF carburetor for the 300 six

Recommended Posts

Jonathan,

What's the news 2 months later??...all systems still check OK?

I need to order a 300 carb soon, and I've been saving yours in My Ebay for just that day, but I recently noticed that it says "Does Not Ship to Canada". Bugger.

Anyway...

A guy on FB linked to a carb he bought on Amazon (see below) and he said it works great. He said he bolts it on and the engine started right up and only needed a couple light adjustments.

I wonder if the Amazon one is the same or similar? Any comments good or bad from the 300i6 crowd?

Do you have a recommendation for carb gaskets/kits?

Ok, so I bought another YF copy from Amazon, and I suppose I should have asked before I ordered, but what is supposed to connect to the little brass fitting on the choke? Can I just leave this open? I will likely be installing a manual cable anyway...

I'm pretty sure that's where hot air from the exhaust manifold goes in. And while the carb should be tuned to accommodate that amount of vacuum, you don't want to be pulling "dirty" air in. So it either needs to be plugged or routed to a source of clean air.

So originally there were exhaust gasses plumbed to this port via a tube from the manifold? I suppose I could rig something up, as the original line is long gone now.

No. There was clean air coming from the air cleaner down a tube that was heated by the exhaust system and then went into the choke.

Ahh ok very good sir.

I connected this "unused" port, since going with manual choke, to the port high up on the throttle body, which originally supplied filtered air to the tube which ran through the exhaust manifold and supplied heated air to the choke housing. It was neat and could not be seen while using the original air cleaner.

Thanks David, I will do the same thing then as I plan to install a manual choke.

Can you recommend a manual choke kit that works well with this carb or should I just order whatever generic kit I can find easily?

Hi Cory,

My updated review on the unit I bought is still positive, but speaking of the choke I will say that my manual set up is perhaps even more touchy and hair trigger than on the OEM carbs. It’s been chilly enough to need some choke to start it, and it’s never really smooth. It’s kind of a balancing act of pedal and choke for the first minute or so until it warms up enough to actually drive it. I don’t know if it’s just me or if it’s a carb design defect. To me it’s not a huge deal, since it runs well once it warms up. Unfortunately I don’t know what brand my manual choke it is. It came with the truck.

Thanks for the feedback Jonathan. I just received my Chinese YF copy carb from Amazon yesterday. Seems like a nice enough piece to look at, and the packaging was very good. Came with 3 gaskets that I haven't even looked at yet.

I ordered the Dorman manual choke from RockAuto (for $9 bucks) with some other stuff last night.

I'm probably a month or more away from trying to start it, but I put a bit of a push on ordering parts last week and this week since deliveries leading up to Christmas will be crazier this year compared to others.
