Insurance?

Recommended Posts

Janey and I were talking the other day that when I get Big Blue on the road again he needs to have better insurance than what State Farm offers. They, and most automobile insurance companies, just insure it for "replacement value" and don't take into account all the "upgrades" that have been done.

I've read that "classic vehicle" insurance is the way to go, like maybe Hagerty, as they appraise the vehicle and take into account what it is/has. So some questions for y'all:

1. What "classic vehicle" insurance do you have? Or, if you don't have it yet, what have you considered?

2. What was the process of getting it? How did you get your appraisal?

3. What are the restrictions on it?

I am currently looking for the same thing. My insurance is through USAA and my agent is looking for information about what they call their vintage program. I will update as I get more information.

Thanks, Steve. I’ll look forward to your findings.

That I will be interested in too as I also have USAA. I do have full coverage including a $100 deductible on the windshield replacement. They will also, if I have a small stone chip cover a repair for that, and then if the windshield needs replacement later waive the deductible.

Once the "project" is on the road, I will definitely want the low deductible and windshield coverage. $1395 + $90 for installation.

In VA I can put antique tags on, but then become very limited in mileage, but no inspection. When I had Matt's Corvair on the road, I had a set of 1965 VA plates that I had our paint lab blast and paint with basically Imron so it wouldn't chip or discolor. We had to do the numbers and 19 VIRGINIA 65 by hand.

I have hagerty on my 80 toyota.

Its a piece of junk compared to everyones bullnose and it has been garaged for a year, 2 by the time I get busy patching it together. So I have not gone thru the appraisal process.

Mostly they want pictures of your vehicle.

And they want to know how it is garaged or stored.

I inquired abt my old suzuki and they did not classify it as a classic but said if I could provide proof of some car club they would be willing to deem it a collectors item.

In general, the person I spoke with was great but all I wanted was basic service to keep my vehicle registered and street legal. They were pretty open about discussing the different options and I imagine if you showed them some sale prices from Bring a Trailer or any auctions, they could value your vehicle accordingly.

They are specialists in classic vehicles and understand what types of vehicles are increasing in value, so I expect them to be very open to the bullnose. They asked me no questions abt my toyota.

Also, know that most other companies selling classic car insurance are repackaging Hagerty policies. I cant say specifically which companies, but I have a buddy who had such a policy.

Another thing to keep in mind, for anyone who daily drives their bullnose, this may affect their decision to cover you. The insurance is designed mainly for car show and sunday cruise kind of vehicles.

This is purely what I recall from a couple years ago so take it all with a grain of salt.

Also, this insurance can be ridiculously affordable...

What?! 🤷‍♂️ I bought the copper “Historic Vehicle” plates for my ‘81 and was told that it just needed to be 25+ years old and that I had to be willing to pay the extra registration cost. Never any mention of restrictions (or benefit exemptions) for having these plates. I’ve had these plates for 3 years and never been pulled over for driving at night. They gave me two plates, but told me the front is optional.

Did you see he in not in the USA.

Also if in the USA I think it goes by the state DMV as to the restrictions placed on the plate and why I did not get one for my truck and same goes for insurance and restrictions.

I have Hagerty Insurance on my truck that I got thru my agent. All I told them was what I had and the work I put into it that the normal run of the mill insurance would not cut it.

A few days later they called be back with prices and what would be covered, etc. I was happy and told them go for it.

I did not have to take the truck to anyone or have them come look at it or even send pictures, it's not like I don't have any :nabble_head-rotfl-57x22_orig:

There is no restrictions from DMV as I have normal plates and vary little restrictions from Hagerty as they say "You want to show off your pride & joy and we want you to so drive it!" and I have.

I cant remember if they wanted it in a garage but it is and locked when at my house but at work it is in the parking lot with the rest of the guys trucks & cars.

Mine is insured for $11,000 and I can up that if I want at any time. I can also insure any extra parts I have for the truck, I did not.

If the truck is totaled, hope that never happens, I can have it back to do as I want with it.

I am happy that I can drive it any time and any place not just weekends and to / from shows only.

Just putting out what I was told by MVD and by a neighbor that is a State Trooper. I was helping him with his Ford 9N and we were talking about and he told me about the restrictions. There is another guy in Chino valley that works at Charter Materials that has an 84 F250 4X4, 460 and a C6 that had those plates. He took them off because he got a ticket for driving it after dark. Nice pickup, red, white and blue with a flat bed.
