Electric fan upgrade

I'm looking to upgrade to electric fans and finally get rid of the junk flex fan I have on my motor. I'm doing a little reading and they say the best thing you can do to run these things is to upgrade to a 3G alternator.

While maybe someday in the future I may do that conversion, now is not that time. I am looking into tying it into a coolant port so that I can have them turn on automatically, but I may run them on a toggle switch.

Am I asking too much of a (I believe) 60a alternator? I run no other accessories other than a bluetooth radio and MSD ignition.

That being said, what fans would guys recommend to me.

The 3G has to be done first then the fans.

Look at what electric fans pull for amps before you go jumping to them and stay with the stock ALT.

Now I am not a big fan of electric fans to replace the engine driven fan.

You just moved the power needed to work a fan to the ALT and most of the "up gade fans" they never work right and people wonder why the motor now over heats!

I’ve never looked into it very far, so none to recommend. I’m with Dave, heard from people and read where folks have not had good luck, if it wasn’t designed for an electric fan.

I think we recently discussed this here. I mentioned that my Suburban has the B-17 fan and two electric ones also. For the front and rear A/C in slow traffic I’m assuming. And the tranny cooler and the hydro boost cooler. Man that thing has a lot of stuff!

Well dang, I guess I would have to convert to 3G. I did look up the amperage they draw, wow!

I think I may go back to a conventional clutch style fan. I never had any issues overheating with my flex fan, but I figured if I could free up some easy horsepower it might help.

Angelo, other than a 460 or 300, there should be enough room in front of the water pump shaft for a 2000 up Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis/Town Car two speed electric fan. It is for the same core size as the 1984-96/7 V8 gas engine radiator. It does draw some serious power in high speed. I have one I was planning on using and turned upside down on the floor, it would damn near lift off on high.

It uses a 30 amp circuit breaker for low and a 50 amp fuse for high. The relay is a special high current one, same style a lot of ABS pumps use. I was going to put one on Darth till I found there is a whopping 5 1/4" from the water pump shaft to the radiator. If you decide to try I have a diagram I set up that doesn't need a computer for control.

I am interested in seeing that diagram. The more I think about it the more I'll probably do a 3G conversion.
