Flare Side bed for sale

Recommended Posts

So it's diagonally across Okiehome from me? Our daughter went to school in Abilene, TX so we've driven through Wichita Falls many times. Cool!

FuzzFace2,

Thanks for posting the link to the other forum.

In case no one wants to venture over there I will sum up what is gong on. I have a short wheel base '70 F100 that I bought as a Flareside but have since converted it to a Styleside. I could not bring myself to scrape the bed a couple of years ago and it has since been in a connex high and dry. Last week my dad and I were taking inventory of the connex as we are going to clean it out, cut it up and scrap it. This means what ever we have room for in the shop will go in there and the rest will get scrapped with the connex. I have room for this bed under the car port attached to the shop but it really needs to find a home.

This is only applicable here being that unbeknown to me was the flareside bed on my truck is off an 80-86 F100/150 or at least that is what I thought by looking at pictures of flareside trucks. With some help on the other forum and some folks here it has come to my attention that the box and tailgate of the bed are most likely original to the truck but the fenders are off an 80-86 F100/150.

I was planning on just scrapping it but found out that the fenders on this bed are no longer made and are not just readily available in good shape. Here are some pictures of the bed:

On the truck when I bought it and was hauling it back to the shop:

We moved it around back of the shop for temporary storage until we could make room inside the shop. So all of these pictures are with the bed leaned up against the back wall of the shop with the tailgate down and on 2x4's.

Bottom of the Bed:

Bottom of the Bed Looking at the Tailgate:

Driver Side:

So again, I am very willing to just selling the fenders as they are probably the only thing anyone on this forum are interested in. I will probably just scrap the box and either sell the tailgate to a '79 and down truck owner or make wall art out of it in the shop.

I live in the Tulsa, OK area but the bed is down in the Lawton, OK area at my parents house. I am down there every other week or so bringing them back up to the Tulsa area to sell is not a big deal at all. In all honesty I would probably deliver them to the Dallas / Ft. Worth area and on up into Missouri for the right price. Lawton, OKC, and Tulsa areas would be no delivery charge as I travel that route anyhow.

Would like to get $750 for the pair and really would prefer to sell as a pair.

You are correct, the bed itself is not a 80-86 box, as has straight bed sides and no built in fender wells for the 54” width change. However, I also do not think it is original to the truck. The bed rails are flat on top and I believe that was 78/79 only. That is an uncommon box. No doubt it has extra holes drilled to mount the 80-86 fenders, but if it’s not rotted out I’m sure someone would love to have the bed itself. It’s plenty useable on a 80-86 truck, except that a period correct tailgate would be too wide and you would need to be okay with the older style.

According to Denis Carpenter, the Flareside steel side panels were the same from 1978-1987, with the only difference being the fender bolt locations on the 78-79 panels. They were the same steel parts otherwise.

I know it's pretty common up here in the land of rust for people to fab new side panels without the fender humps. They aren't really needed unless you were running really large/wide tires and were not lifted.

It never occurred to me that the older style tailgate would be narrower. I forgot about that. I know you can buy an aftermarket tailgate for the 80-86 trucks, but it does not have FORD stamped into it.

Good to know... measuring the tailgate width would pretty well settle it. 54” wide is for the later style with the little fender wells, or earlier 8’ flaresides that also had the little fender wells.

So I have scrapped all of the bed with the exception of the fenders and the tail gate. I have the room to hold on to these parts so if anyone wants them hit me up and we can see about coming to a reasonable agreement on price.
