Tommy - You are now, quite literally, on the map. And, close to Jonathan.

Good to know about the 300. Would you be willing to share the details of your build in its own thread? Like the cam grind, head porting, carb jetting, etc. I know there are guys on here that are very interested in building a strong 300.

Some of us do appreciate the characteristics of the 300/4.9L! :nabble_smiley_whistling:

Welcome to the forum. Did you bump the compression up? Seems most car makers except BMW have abandoned big sixes, claiming crank flex and long dimensions incompatible with transverse orientation.

But there is no other configuration with perfect balance. That's why so many OTR trucks are big sixes.

Can't believe some would mistake your exhaust tone for a V8.

Yes, I am interested in specs to build my 300. Ive been thinking about the Fitech 2 barrel and a clifford intake.

With the hedman header and true dual setup, people do mistake it for a v8 during idle and low rpm high load situation. Once the engine hits a certain rpm though, there is no mistaking its a six.

I dont have exact numbers in my head as my dad and i did this engine build in 1994...has had 20k put on it since then...i have all the paperwork put up...just gotta drag it out...with the two piece split tuned equal length headers and the exhaust mufflers system i experimented with many variations of, i have it sounding like a v8 not a inline 6...i did the exhaust 4 times before I chose this current version...had the c6 built at same time...still have the complete original 60k mile engine on an engine stand...this is an 80 block in it now...also used Pertronix ignitor II ignition replacing the duraspark crap...also i used an older style falcon and agriculture distributor that has the grease fitting to grease the shaft externally...

...i did the exhaust 4 times before I chose this current version...had the c6 built at same time...still have the complete original 60k mile engine on an engine stand...this is an 80 block in it now...also used Pertronix ignitor II ignition replacing the duraspark crap...

Id be interested in buying that 300. Also, would like to know your exhaust setup, as I have a true split exhaust header also. I also upgraded to a Chevy HEI. Be careful calling the duraspark ignition "crap"....im being light hearted, but just a warning, someone is likely argue with you about the ford ignition being crap.....with that said.....I run Petronix in other cars too. I dont do duraspark, its unneccessarily complicated in my humble opinion. HEI is drop in, run a 12v switched from the battery and set the timing, walk away and never think about it again.

I'm not a purist that thinks that a Ford vehicle has to have a Ford ignition system. But there is one thing a DS-II does that HEI doesn't - retard the timing when cranking. The white wire signals to the ignition module that the starter is engaged, and the box is supposed to retard the timing slightly.

But not all DS-II boxes have that functionality. When I got Big Blue his 460 was hard to start when hot. In fact, it kicked back pretty badly. But I remembered that some boxes don't have that feature and swapped to a Motorcraft box. From that point on the engine never kicked back when starting.

hello

sorry that motor will never be sold unless the truck for some reason is sold etc. ...I mean i guess there is a price but it would not be worth it... i too was being lite hearted on calling duraspark crap but lets call a duck what it is...a duck... the HEI set up is an upgrade but looks horrible to me.. I tried a Davis Unified HEI set up but had oiling issues to the shaft and distr. gear...put the older falcon/agriculture type distr. with grease fitting in and the upgraded Petronix and turn all rpms i can throw at it......Petronix is just as great, never any adjustment or servicing just like your HEI but way cheaper and i keep all my stock looking cap, wires and coil...thats what works for me but not for all i do understand..as far as exhaust goes it is 2.5 all the way back and has two small diameter tube type mufflers that i bought from the muffler shop that did the work after many trials...they were Thrush i believe as it was years ago...he was being paid for all his work and troubles and was happy to help me experiment.....the tailpipes run down pass side because of side mounted gas tank on driver side and turn up over the rear end and then dump out just at the tire still under the truck not exposed/seen...if your ever on i40 in Kingman AZ stop in and check it out and take a listen...have attached some pics of engine bay

my timing is up a few degrees and i pump the accelerator two half pumps and it fires up with the Pertronix and high energy spark coil...if one works with theirs as much as i have on setting this thing up you would appreciate the fact when i turn the key it fires every time as it supposed to...this truck is really awesome...i am a lucky man but my dad and I put the work into it to make it this way...added two engine bay pics

I understand you not wanting to sell the original 300. Still have the original in mine. Its either 160,000 or 260,000. I bought the truck from the original owners son. He wasnt very sure of mileage. But it runs great. Ran like a turd when I got it. Yanked all the california emissions crap off, upgraded to HEI, header and exhaust. Still running the original carter 1 barrel. Its not winning races, but the choke works now and it fires up in the cold. I drive it 300+ miles a week no problems with distributor gear oiling.
