Little Blue 82

Yeah, I drove it a little more. Honestly, I aint impressed with the setup over the factory log intake and 1 barrel. Its good enough. Its a 300 Straight six, I ain't going to get 300hp and 400lb ft of torque easily. So, for now its a tinker toy.

Maybe I will start watching for a ecoboost pullout....or a coyote 5.0 2nd gen.....or.......turbo 300 six? Or....I need to just shut up and go to bed....

Hmmm? I like to think that I love the 300/4.9L engine as much as anybody and the following will be with that in mind.

The most limiting design factor of this engine is the head. With its U-flow design, relatively small ports and less than smooth inlet [especially the valve pockets], low [8.0-8.7:1] compression ratio and long stroke, it is not a horsepower making machine. The centrally located low CFM carburetor and log intake makes for variable length runners [with sharp turns] and the log style exhaust manifold does the same. Actually, this design is excellent for a very flat torque curve, but prevents being able to easily rev to much above 3500 RPMs, so the horsepower is quite low [~120 stock], but can deliver ~260 ft. lbs. @ ~1650 RPMs.

Toward the end of its production cycle, Ford did have a prototype crossflow head, which would have done a lot to help, but was never placed into production.

These engines can be made to produce high horsepower, but it is expensive and equal or greater HP can be achieved at a much lower cost by going with a V8.

Ray, instead of going with an Ecoboost or Coyote or turbo, why not keep it simple and "old school" by swapping the venerable six cylinder with a 5.0L/302 or 5.8L/351. You would not encounter as many obstacles and could have plenty of horsepower! :nabble_smiley_good:

Well David....Ive got a 302 sitting in the bronco....but that factory efi and stupid looking intake system would HAVE to go.

You already have the carburetor.

That 302 has a good c6 also. But dang I love shifting. I really want more than 3 or 4 gears.

Are there any 6 speed automatics from a late model that can bolt onto a 302?

The transmission in the truck should work with the small block engine; motor mounts are different [perches].

Fast idle and idle speed screws are backed all the way out, and it still idles high....I push on the lever to jamb the butterflys closed and it stops idling....

I am still catching up pull the throttle cable off and see if that helps.

I should read ALL the posts :nabble_smiley_blush:

Good to hear you got it running.

Other than the EFI exh. manifolds to help on flow I like the low RPM power the 300 has and why I stayed with the factory intake & carb.

With the slow shifting T18 and the almost 1000 RPM drop between shifts I don't see the need to up the RPM power level at this point.

The driving I do I am shifting at about 1500 RPM between 2nd & 3rd and 2000 RPM between 3rd & 4th(1:1) I don't see the need to go higher for normal driving.

When the trans will not shift into 4th, bad trans, I have to force it back into 3rd and have gone as high as 3000 RPM. Cant wait till I can swap this trans out for the NP435 and hope it shifts better.

If you want more gears with the Advance Adaptor Range Splitter you can split each gear and can be used with 4WD.

A 4sp trans turns in to an 8sp with 2 reverse gears then add the transfer and that is another 4 forward and 1 reverse . 12 forward and 3 reverse, wait did I do that right? 16 forward & 4 reverse?

Either way that is a lot of gears.

Oh, yeah... Ford also had a prototype turbo 4.9L! And it has been reported that it out-powered the 7.5L of that year!

We can only wish these ideas made it to production. :nabble_smiley_cry:

My 3.5L turbo'd six puts out 365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. The 1985 7.5L was rated at 245 hp and 380 lb-ft. That's 49% more hp and 11% more torque.

So....since I cant GIVE AWAY this POS 87 bronco, Ive decided to take it apart.

Im saving the drive train, front auto locking axle and seats for myself.

Im going to clean up that 302 and throw it in Blue for a little while.

Im going to take that c6 and tcase and mount it to a roll around wood frame test stand. The 300 will get mounted to it, where I am going to get a forced induction ready fuel injection system setup put on it.

I cant stop loving this straight six. But I love v8s. So I am going to have both. I'll be looking to buy another flareside eventually.
