Hub Caps...

Recommended Posts

I know there seem to be a few posts, and I know there is a resource for a style and parts. I was wondering, does anyone have a picture of what a 1984 F350 XLT 4x4 7.5L would have had new? I need the 2 different ones, front and back because of the locks (which also need a ford sticker) but besides taste I am really curious what it likely came with in the first place. I have the original wheels, the white no frills, so just can't seem to find how they originally came.

Thanks.

I don't have the 1984 dealer fact book online, but you can see the 1983 version by clicking on the Library link. And in it there's a discussion of what comes in the XL trim level that says "Bright hub caps (not available on F250/350 4x4 (shown) or Six Wheeler." And the XLT says it has all of the XL features plus, and doesn't mention hub cabs.

In other words, the F250 & 350 4x4 trucks didn't come with hubcaps.

I poured through the various documents and pictures, thanks for that pointer. I think this is ultimately what seems to be what I need.

I have these wheels, seems to me these are made for having a hubcap of some type. They aren't straight show wheels.

I think I need something like this, that has a lock opening on the front but looks like a hubcap otherwise.

Now.. to search and find someone who actually has these :)

Before you spend much time looking for those....

Go to Documentation/Driveline/Wheel Covers. On the Types tab you'll see all of the wheel covers and what "type" Ford called each of them. The type you are talking about is a 6.

Then go to Applications tab and scroll down to 1984 and you'll see that the Type 6 wheel covers were for the Broncos or F150s. In fact, if you zoom in on the picture you showed you'll see that is an F150. The issue is that those wheel covers only fit 15" wheels, and you don't have 15" wheels.

Below is a snippet from that documentation for the 1984 F250/350. And while there is a Type 5 hubcap for the F250 w/a 3800# front axle, there isn't one for a 4600# front axle. The reason for that is that the hubcap for the lighter axle has a 3 1/4" hole but the heavier axle would require a 4 3/16" hole for the 1K104, which is a CAP ASSY. (LOCKING HUB).

I'm sure your F350 came with the heavier axle, although you might confirm that. If so then Ford didn't have a hubcap that would fit over that hub.

My 85 f250 2 wheel drive came with these hub caps on rims like yours, the outer inch or so on the rear stick out far enough they get sand blasted and lose there shine. I changed to the aluminum rims from a bricknose series.

Yep, I discovered that when I was trying to mimic the crew cab showed in the 1984 brochure.

They didn’t made front hub caps for the 4x4, at least for a D50 axle.

So I ended up mimicking this truck in the same 1984 brochure.

Nice white steel wheels.

Jeff - You are right. The larger D50 hubs on your truck, and all of the hubs on the F350s, and too big to stick through the hubcaps used on the D44HD's of the lighter axle on the F250's. Maybe there's some hubcap somewhere that fits the bigger hubs, but I don't know what it is.

Those say van, and if you look at the 4th photo it sure looks like they are for a semi-floating axle like a D61.

I don't think those '90's style wheel covers will fit over your 350 rear hubs.
