    The electrical pickup unit in the bottom of the distributor can go bad. It generates a small electrical charge [millivolts?] which signals the ignition box.

    The side photo [where the mounts attach] looks like what I remember the original unit from my truck. I would bet Ford used different mounts to attach the same radio style.
