Rear Axle-D70, D70 HD or D70U?

Jermd21
Good morning everyone.  I am attempting to get a rebuild kit for my rear axle but I don't know which one it is.  There is still a tag on it that I can ultimately use to determine what I need but I'm not near the truck.  I am confident it's a Dana 70 but I don't know if it's a 70, 70HD or 70U.

It is a 1984 F-250 HD 4x4 with a 460 and a 4 speed manual transmission.  It is a full floating, single rear wheel axle with left hand threaded lug studs on the drivers side.  The GVWR is 8600 lbs. The rear axle code is G3, but looking at the application chart just says its a Dana with 3.54 gear ratio.

Did Ford use one or the other of these during that time or did they use all three?  Thank you very much for the help.

Nothing Special
I'd be a little surprised if it's a Dana 70.  I had an early '85 F-250HD, with a GVWR of 8600.  That had a Dana 60 full-float.

Dana did usually cast a number in the housing, usually in very large font (letters a couple inches tall).  That should confirm if it's a 70 or a 60.  but sorry, I don't know how to narrow it down more than that.

The only reason I believe it to be a D70 is because of this:

That tag has a 6 digit "BOM" number and it is the definitive way, but if you can get a hold of that and find the 6 digit BOM code off it, type that in the document below. This document has the holy grail list of all Dana axles used in that timeframe

https://media.spicerparts.com/cfs/files/media/4iQeZCDvGePv7Mpjy/x510-9.pdf

I had an '85 F250 8600 GVWR with Axle tag 605247 which corresponds to Dana 70U... really not sure if it came with that or if was swapped later... everything I could find said it was original to the truck (axle code 72,etc). But I can never be sure.

Is it the original axle? What axle code does the door tag have?

Yes, this is the original axle and the door code for the rear axle is the G3 code I mentioned. Thanks.

Vivek,

Thanks for that link.  I decided to make the drive and inspect the tags on both axles.  Looks like 605205-6 for the rear which corresponds to a Dana 70U With Powr Lok (Limited Slip) & 3.54 gear ratio and I believe it is a 35 spline.

Up front is 610200-1 which is a Dana 50 TTB Snow Fighter (whatever that means) which of course has 3.54 gear ratio as well.  Thanks everyone for the help!  Gonna get brakes, fuel and axles done next week on my Project F-250.

I'm a little surprised!  But that's definitely no Dana 60 from the appearance alone.  And from the numbers cast into it, yes, I'd definitely agree it's a Dana 70!
