Well, what do you know. Appears, to me, to be a 351 Cleveland.

I believe it is designed to allow additional air to the air filter when the big engine demands it.

By the way, I was curious enough to check, but according to Google that Lincoln was 5077 lbs "wet", and 20 ft long!

Yep, it's a resonator. It was used on the luxury cars. You know, the ones people don't want to hear anything in . .even the engine gulping air.
