Coolant system capacity?

Recommended Posts

Went to the page that has the owners guides to try and find out what the coolant capacity is for my truck.

When I clicked on the blue 1984 link nothing happened. Got 2 small circles on diagonal corners of the block that the link was in, but nothing else.

Can someone tell me what the coolant system capacity is for a 1984 F250 with 460 is? Want to make sure I have enough antifreeze on hand when I change the radiator.

Thanks,

Carl

Thanks Gary

Cbarnes,

I have a 1984 F-150 with a 4.9 and no A/C. It says 13 quarts in the book but I was flushing the coolant this weekend and each flush produced 8 quarts. That was draining at the petcock valve on the radiator only. I suspect if you pull the lower radiator hose, thermostat, heater hoses, you would get closer to that “13 quarts”.

Anyhow, I suspect that it’s easier to just keep the receipt for the coolant!

5.8 liter motor here, so it's going to be different, and also my motor was freshly rebuilt so absolutely dry system, but with the bigger radiator it took just under 5 gallons.

With presumably some coolant left in the block, 4 gallons should do it, but 5 to be on the safe side.
