The following was copied from that page: Tailgates: 1980 - '82 tailgates use straps while 1983 and later tailgates use cables. Given that they do not directly interchange. However, it is possible to put an '83 - '86 tailgate on an earlier bed fairly easily, as described on the Tailgates and then the Changing Tailgates tabs here.
