2020 F150 vs 1982 F150

This post is just for fun. Last week my company rented me a 2020 F150 5.0, 4x4, crew cab XLT. I must say that I loved 99% of that truck.

Only 2 things I didnt like. 1. That silly swoop thing in the door. Maybe it helps visually? I dont know, I cant honestly figure it out. It doesnt look good at all in my opinion. 2. The radio/nav. If I was to purchase a brand new 2020 with that big touch screen in the dash, and spend $40,000+ for the truck, Id expect a decent sounding radio, and a navigation system. There was NO navigation.

Everything else was totally BAD-A!! The 5.0 395hp 400lbft of torque would make that sucka scoot!!! Traction control can be turned off easily. Burnouts ensue quickly!!! 10 speed auto with manual mode was a lot of fun.

Interior style Top Notch. Beautiful. The front end style was a little weak in my opinion but for sure good lookin. I prefer the taller/wider look of the chevy.

P.s. I AM THE REASON YOU NEVER BUY A USED RENTAL CAR. I reduced the life expectancy of the tires on this truck drastically. Drove it like I stole it!!!

I rent 2018/2019/2020 pickups often enough to appreciate all you write, but I much prefer the style of the 80s trucks. Even your picture makes me stare at your ‘82 and ignore the 2020. If only you could retrofit all the mod traction controls etc. for driving in snow and ice... My Bronco likes to face in reverse during those conditions far too easily.

The alluring sound of a restomod Siren is calling in the distance.

Vic, I hear ya. The whole time I drove that 2020 I was wondering if I could find a wrecked short wheel base late model and just do a body swap.

99-2005 Tahoes have a perfect wheel base for a flareside body.

Even if you get nav with it, like I did on Blue, the nav is poor. The touch screen is awful, and there's no joy stick like most other vehicles. I really dislike it.

But I'll take that 5.0 on any day with my 3.5. :nabble_smiley_evil:

(Twin turbos more than make up for the lack of displacement, and having ordered it for towing the 3.55's make it launch much better than the 3.23's most trucks get.)

The Coyote is fun but that 10 speed really bugs me.

Also, I'm not a fan of 9 quart oil changes and plastic oil pans haha.

Maybe because I work on them daily the novelty of new trucks has worn off. Partially why I love the oldies.

I personally can't bring myself to spend $40k on a truck, when I can spend up to $10k on something older and use the other $30k to improve it. :nabble_anim_confused:

But if people like to throw away $40k+ for the sake of "reliability" and fancy technology, then more power to them.

Where are you finding $40K new F150s? I was looking on the lot and even the newer Rangers were over $50K.

I think if youve worked hard and want to spend that kind of money on a truck, go for it.

Personally, I never will. Not when trucks like Big Blackie are selling for $15,000.

With the stupid prices on new trucks, I think a guy could possibly make money on retro-mods. Modern chassis plus old school bodies.

Gary, next time I'll see if they have the ecoboost. There was a brand new silverado sitting there when I dropped off the F150....awefully tempting to get that just for a comparison. The next rental I will likely have for about a month.....chebby or furd? I did see a challenger too......oh geez my head will explode if all 3 are sitting there next saturday.

Base models start around $26k here. But barely anybody wants that these days. So I went middle ground at $40k for base XLT and STX price. Are they higher in your location? The Rangers are ridiculously priced for what they are, I wouldn't be surprised if Ford shutters that line again in a few years.

My company has almost exclusively Fords. Maybe 15 in the fleet, f150s to 450s mostly from this millenia but a couple rusty OBS trucks they pull out for snow duty.

Looks aside, Ive been impressed with them. We pull trailers on the hiway up hills and sometimes I have to check the dash gauges to make sure we are moving as fast as it seems.

Im not a fan of modern cars in general, but not because they arent generally good vehicles. For me the test is how easy they are to work on and how they hold up with 150k plus miles on them because thats probably when I will be able to afford one.
